Flap open or closed...

ok, so silly question coming up:

Is the exhaust flap in only 1 pipe?

Is the exhaust more throaty with the flap open or closed?

Since my engine light came on, the car has had that exhaust noise all the time (all the noise, no performance!). When I poked it with my finger with the engine off, it seemed stuck closed?

Its probably restricting the performance if its stuck closed. Try using something like a screwdriver to force it open.

The pipe with the flap has a bypass pipe so that even with the flap closed, there is always some exhaust gas escaping on the RHS. You really don't want to block both pipes with a flap as they fail anyway and are better bypassed.

Just done mine which had started to rattle. It's much better without it.

Well, every day is a learning day!
Just been out to check mine - I didn't know that :)

With mine it happened as soon as I collected from the dealer after they checked the fault code (going in Friday for further investigation), so I’m wondering if the car is doing it on purpose as part of its reduced power thing? Wouldnt open with my finger when engine off so need to check if its open with engine on.

The flap has sounded bit raspy recently so it might be goosed, but if its jammed shut I dont understand why I get all the loud noise. Need to check position with engine on.

You should be able to open the valve easily with your finger, it’s not attached to a very strong spring.

I looked again last night and it was open. I was able to push it against the spring so thats good.

Its going in to the garage today so hopefully they can fix the engine fault and it will be ok again.

Gonna ask then to check the flap operation anyway whilst they have it in.
