Flakey Wheels (18" Split Rims)

Hi Guys,


Age old question really, what is the answer to this...!

One of my wheels is starting to flake, I'm guessing the others will follow.

a) Buy new wheels?
b) Get them refurbbed without the problem laquer (been quoted £550 - bit pricey)
c) Hassle the dealer to get them done under warranty (mine's an approved used BMW, inside it's one year warranty, are wheels covered under this?).
d) Does anybody know of a cheaper alternative to the refurb rather than getting the full set completely stripped and re-done (patching up certain areas).

Whilst I'm here, does anybody know the model of the wheel that comes on the coupes (multi-spoke). Quite a standard wheel, thinking I may change over to them - I'd prefer CSL's but I don't really understand what I would need to do to get these fitted (modifications etc).

Sorry for the newbie esque post!

Had my M wheels replaced for the second time in 2 years because of flaking. No question asked, just replaced by the dealer.
 
Must be back to the dealer if still under warranty. If you replace with 108s then after careful cleaning and drying seal the inside joint between the outer spoked rim and main wheel body with clear silicone sealer. This will prevent water ingress at this joint which starts of the corrosion process - it worked for me!
 
DEE CEE sorry but used warrant will not cover wheels :(

Where are you based as i have a contact who will repair and respray the outer lip £60 a wheel and is mobile.

Re: the CSL Issue. Could I change straight over to 18" CSL's without any mod's to the tyres (keep the runflats) etc? i.e. does the issue only arise when you go to 19's?

Anybody got any pictures of a standard Coupe with 18" CSL's? (I know someone on here has them on a Black Coupe, can't seem to find the pictures at the moment though).

I'm seriously thinking about changing the wheels, either to 135's or CSL's as I don't particularly want to keep having to get the wheel's touched up and so on...
 
I had a similar dilemma when my 108s went bad...

went for the 203s - ultra rare over here and similar design :D

Personally I would'nt touch them with a barge pole, if you currently have108's you have a staggered fitment, the rear wheels are wider than the fronts, the wheels in the ad are only 8J and the offest is completly wrong for example the BMW style 103 wheels which are 8J have an offset of 47, the wheels in the ad have an offset of 35, IMHO you would be better off spending your money on a quality refurb, also genuine BMW CSL's are a 19" wheel.
 
If the car is under three years old the manufacturer warranty still counts so wheels can be replaced under warranty.
 
Ah cool, the car is an 07, so therefore still under the warranty. I've contacted the dealer and the guy is back tomorrow, so expect to hear back from him.

Bit of an update on this, I have to take the car to have the wheels inspected. So hopefully they should be getting sorted!

I bought mine as AUC just outside of mnfr warranty, and have had constant issues with them. They were all refurbed (painted) but keep bubbling - I'm fed up now.

Although they aren't covered under AUC warranty - I don't want to pay for a continuing issue!

as per earlier post only covered by manufactureres warranty
 
I know, but my issue is the dealer refurbed them for me before I picked the car up, then has had to re-do them since at least 3 times. I think the dealer, not BMW warranty, should do something.
 
Hi Guys,


So I've had three wheels changed today under warranty. The remaining wheel was "supposed" to be getting refurbished (they wouldn't replace it as it had been kurbed), however, as the wheel had been previously refurbed (and losing the outer chrome edge - painted the same colour as the inner) BMW said they can't do it, as they would have to strip the wheel right back rather than just "patching" it up...

Anyway, looks like I'm going to buy a brand new wheel (so then I've got a set of four wheels for the price of one). BMW have quoted £293, does anybody know anywhere I could get one cheaper than this?

Also, do the wheels come with their own warranty? i.e. if in a years time (when the AUC/Manufacturer's warranty have ran out) when/if the wheels flake/corrode again, will they be covered?

Overall I'm a bit dissappointed as I had been told the wheel could be refurbished. So I took the day off work so the car could be left with the garage whilst the wheel was refurbed in the bodyshop, only to get a phone call at 2pm saying the new wheels had been fitted but the refurb hadn't been completed. So not only has this experience cost me the price of a new wheel, it has also cost me a day off work that I didn't need to lose (i'm a contractor and only get paid when I am working). If they had picked up the fact it couldn't have been refurbed earlier, I would have just got the wheels swapped over first thing in the morning and went to work!

Sorry for the rant guys! Any help/answers appreciated!
