Fixed!

Hi zedders, I've recently been hearing the cooling fan rev up & down on cold start up which it never used to do :o
After a bit of forum searching & a trip to my local Indy to hook up to his diagnostic machine, it was confirmed my n52 electronic water pump was fubard (almost)
Not unexpected as my car is approaching 90k & these things don't last forever-these magnesium engines don't take kindly to massive overheating so I stopped using the car & ordered the pump in  (oe supplier)
Off to my Indy this morning, undertray off & the highly trained tech (my nephew) removed the old pump while I went about changing the engine oil & filter

Expensive paper weight...

It's so much easier when it's above your head

It's very important to use new fixing bolts when the new one goes on, I got 3 new ones from bmw for £6.11

The diagnostic machine tells you what to do

Job finished & pleased to have my zed back in rude health again :driving:
Regards

Bet that pump wasn't cheap either

I think they're £400ish from bmw, I got mine at trade price £288 (must buy my nephew a pint)
I wouldn't want to buy a new one every week but hopefully this should last for a few years... :)
Regards

Thanks for sharing - another thing to keep a look out for - was the noise from the fan pretty obvious?

Yes, it sounded like a hovercraft trying to take off as it revved up & down-not normal from a cold start :o
I've heard of the pumps failing anything from 50k up to around 100k so I knew my car was on thin ice at 88k
Regards

Pumps are 400 plus from bmw but the labour is another 600! I paid 200 for a new pump and the same again to fit such a relief once done!!

£600 labour? What an utter rip off :P
The job didn't take much longer than an hour!
