FIXED!!!! Bluetooth pairing with nav...driving me nuts!

That's really kind of you - thank you. Unfortunately I don't finish work until 6pm tonight and we are in the lakes Friday. The instructions here definitely don't work for my car though so it must be a fault. I'm going to try resetting the ULF module tonight with my diagnostics & DIS.

I've just paired my Galaxy S8 with my 3.0si 2006 expecting it to be a real pain in the ass but it was the easiest I've ever done it  centre console button pressed down 3 seconds ignition first click paired instantly couldn't believe it

So, just back from the main stealer to run the Z4 on the diagnsotics...surprise surprise no faults with the TCU / ULF module or pair button showing. Cleared all previous phones from memory and tried to pair again. Still no luck. Time up..came home £28 lighter!

ph001...... I feel your pain! I had the same problem and spent ages sat in the car swearing at it whilst trying everyone's helpful instructions, but none worked!!! :headbang:

Here's how I finally paired my iPhone 6 (on 2008 Z4C with nav):-

1. Get your phone to the Bluetooth On/Off/Devices settings page and switch off Bluetooth.
2. With KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION, open phone compartment and press and hold the Bluetooth (man shouting!) button for 3 seconds.
3. Then with the button still pressed, insert key into ignition and turn key two clicks (where all the warning lights come on).
4. JUST AS THE SAT-NAV STARTS TO OPEN, release the Bluetooth button.
5. Quickly turn on Bluetooth on the phone. Timing seems to be critical and it took a couple of attempts to get the elusive pairing phone prompt.
6. Once at the prompt, I just entered the 4 digit Bluetooth key into my phone and it connected straight away, and after a few minutes had copied my address book of a few hundred numbers across.

Good luck!!!

Thanks Wylie, I'm pretty sure I have tried that procedure but I will attempt again today and follow it exactly to the dot. If it does eventually work then the pairing is fickle beyond belief!!!

hi
have you tried 0000 as pairing code instead of the one provided
with your ulf module ?

i have fought to pair a phone on a 3.0 of a friend and finally get it
work with 0000 which is strange !

I feel your pain, I'm having exactly the same issue. previously managed to pair a phone but now it's almost like the pairing button (flip down console one) is having a laugh at me.... sigh

UPDATE - fixed!!

So what prompted me to look at this again was a random morning when the sat nav screen would not rise (basically all the ICE was dead). On checking the fuses, I found one of the 15A ones blown. I replaced it and voila, the screen sprang back into life and all was well with the world for about 6 months. I know fuses don't just blow of their own accord so always had a niggling doubt in the back of my mind.

Then a couple of days ago I was reversing out of the garage with the stereo on and opened the center drop down console to get my sunglasses... suddenly the music stopped and the sat nav screen went blank. You guessed it...same 15A fuse. The big clue here was dropping the centre console.

Sure enough, further investigation (cutting the webbed cable sleeving away) revealed that the multi-core cable that runs from the rear bulkhead to the drop down had completely fractured due to the constant flexing when the drop down is opened and closed. I'm guessing the previous owner (like me) stored his sunglasses in there so was basically using it a lot.

Here is the problem....

..and a clearer view with the sleeving completely removed...

So, I needed to set about repairing. I knew it was no good using crappy pvc wire like BMW so I sourced some 22AWG silicone wire which is very flexible. Perfect for applications like this. I suspected even the coax comms cable to the phone was open circuit and sure enough after cutting back the insulation it was. So I had 6 connections to remake in total!

First, the existing wires had to be stripped back and tinned. It's not easy as there is very little room and the wiring from the bulkhead is short.

The silicone wire was cut to about 5cm length and tinned.

Solder the new wires onto the existing loom. Again, not easy in the space you have.

Heatshrink each wire individually to insulate and give the solder joint extra support. You have to be very careful using a heat gun so close to the trim plastics so I just used my soldering iron.

All connections done and looking good..

Finish with self amalgamating rubber tape as it is very flexible, never comes undone and looks quite factory...

Welcome to the world of bluetooth pairing!!!

The bad news is this could well be a ticking time bomb for all E85 owners - it's basically a wiring issue due to the wrong type of wire used on a constantly moving hinge.

Yeh, you’d think they would get it right. It’s pretty obvious on something that is constantly moving.

I got my iPhone SE paired by holding down the button in the console and then starting the car
It paired with ease
This was after trying every other way possible and dozens of attempts
At some point the language came up foreign (I will assume french?) when asking to pair :headbang:

Quick question if I may - mine paired first time, but I assumed one can Bluetooth music too; I’m still using an Aux cable as the music doesn’t stream. Am I missing a trick here or something ?...
