Fix one thing, another thing breaks... Such is life

Fyi, this is more of a rant than anything!

I guess it is just part of the journey of owning a 20 year old, high mileage BMW but I would like it to cut me a bit of slack for once.

Managed to sort

- Oil filter housing and oil cooler gaskets
- Small DISA
- PCV breather hose
- Mickey mouse hose (it obviously broke the second I removed it)
- New rear brake shields as the old ones were literally disintegrating and the handbrake had failed on one side (this was a horrible job)

What is my reward for all this?

Rough idle magically gone and trouble free driving? Lol no

How about DSC, ABS, brake, and tyre pressure lights all on at once. Thank you Z4, thank you...

Separate thread about DSC weirdness will come later

🙃🙃🙃🙃

Code read the car it should reveal what's gone wrong and send you in the right direction.

As @enuff_zed pointed put, probably a rear wheel sensor you messed up while doing the handbrake cables and shields. Another thing could be the ABS ring on the drive shaft.

DSC, ABS and tyre pressure all rely on the correct readings from the wheel sensor, hence all those warning lights on.

As above, those four lights may make you feel as though there is lots wrong with you car, but they are characteristic of a failed wheel sensor. Ironically, three lights together are almost invariably worse.

Given the random nature of the wheel sensor failures, don't discount the fronts too. Obviously a decent code reader will tell you which one. If the speedo still works it's not the rear left.

So firstly thanks for the replies!
Sounds like a wheel sensor

I did also immediately think wheel speed sensor so I got out the scanner and these were my observations. For info, the lights appeared after I did the engine work and before I did the rear brake shields - definitely did not (knowingly) mess with anything to do with DSC system before lights came on.

Codes:

5E4E DSC: control unit, DSC sensor; adjustment values
5DD1 DSC: control unit, run flat indicator
5DD2 DSC: hydraulic unit: adjustment, DSC unit (valves)
5DD0 DSC: hydraulic unit: adjustment, DSC unit (valves)
5E59 DSC: control unit: recode
5DF5 DSC: control unit: internal fault

I also checked some live data

  • Wheel speed sensors - seemed to be working, all displayed the same, or v close to the same when turning. Didn't see an obvious issue there
  • Steering angle sensor - appeared to work in both direction
  • Rotational acceleration sensor: seems to be working fine
  • Brake pressure sensor: not working, no reading
  • Longitudinal acceleration sensor: not working, no reading
  • Lateral acceleration sensor: not working, no reading
I used the scanner tool to run an actuator test of the ABS pump out of curiosity. It ran the test and I heard the pump - all the lights instantly went out and I also started to get normal looking readings from the brake pressure, long/lat acceleration sensors.

Thought maybe it was one just to keep an eye on and put the car away.

2 days later and all 4 lights are back, except now I don't have any codes. Because there are no codes, the scanner won't let me look at live DSC data any more either.

Car seems to otherwise be alright, or certainly no worse than before

Those codes are strange to get- especially the 5DD ones

They suggest your ABS unit needs recalibrating and coding…

Very strange that you now have lights and no codes

What reader are you using?

I thought they were odd as well, I don't really understand why they would be there

Originally they came on when I'd just almost stalled while reversing uphill into a parking space. Not a clue how that could cause codes

Reader is a Launch creader elite - so far it's been great
