Fitting stubby aerial

Well just my luck today, tried to unscrew the whippy, and it snapped off as previous owner had super glued it on.

Advise on way forward with this please

Can you get a pair of mole grips on the stub sticking up? Or try sawing a groove into it & undo it with a screwdriver.
 
Same happened to me. :headbang:

Buy a new base from the main dealers.
Parts 2 & 3 on the diagram. You might not need part 3 but I replaced it anyway.

For only 15+ USD I probably wouldn’t waste time on it...however, you could take an electric soldering gun and heat the remaining stub, that would loosen the super glue, once heated up grab it with your mole grips (I think those are what we call vise grips or more generally, locking pliers) and unscrew it. Of course drilling a hole in what’s left of the threaded part and using an easy out (I don’t know what you call those in your part of the world) would do the trick, but I would still heat it up first...and drilling that close to a very visible part of the body would make even a heart surgeon nervous.
 
Petroleum jelly will melt superglue. Could you smear it in and leave for a while before trying with mole grips?
 
I’d try that and the suggestion for sawing a groove.

I’ve gone stubby but on reflection I think whippy is the way to go
 
You could try a small diameter easy out.. that should pull it out and are quite easy to use with a bit of care.
 
First try spaying some plus gas over the studded area.


Then as said, you would need to drill down the centre of the broken off section of the thread and then use the ease-out

Well,without the stubby or whippy fitted, the radio works perfectly,its the original factory business one?

Going to find something to cover the top and leave alone

I'm sure I read somewhere on here that it's only the aerial for AM signals and that the FM aerial is somewhere inside the rear bumper, in which case that might explain why your radio works fine!

Rather than leave the base and covering it I think I'd be tempted to remove it altogether and put a rubber grommet in the hole for a neater look although it would probably be a bit of a faff to do.
 
Well it certainly solves the whippy v stubby debate!

To be honest I don't know why BMW fitted any sort of antenna to Z4s, unless it was to give us something to "debate" - my E46 and E9* 3 Series don't have them but the radios all worked fine. :?

"rally-chris" had an even better solution when he had a replacement rear wing fitted, but he had a DAB aerial and head-unit in his car. It does look so much better though.

Delete "C" as, in unskilled hands, you will end up breaking the small easi-out.....and then you really have a problem. The tool will self tighten as you turn the tap holder anti-clockwise.
