Fitting Porsche Classic Radio

Hi,

Wondering if anyone has looked into potentially fitting the porsche classic radio unit? I have come across installation done on a Z8 so I am assuming it is possible.

I did contact CEN as they supply them but they flatly said it can't be done.

Curious to hear your thoughts.

Thanks

I hate to ask, but why???

Is it the Carplay/Android Auto/Single DIN combo that's important, or something else?

Get rid of the bulky nav system that looks hideous and is out dated.

Potential plan is:
1. Get rid of the nav system on the car currently.
2. Replace the whole dashboard with non nav one.
3. Have a clean dash with a "modern" radio system which doesn't look out of place. The fold out systems i don't like especially as it blocks the air vents.

This is the closest system i found that might fit the requirement.

Quite interesting, do you know how much is it?

1299 for the unit, not sure what the installation cost plus additional parts to adapt for BMW would cost. I have one audio company who will likely do sound deadening for me says they can installed it but I need details before committing as he said the same for another question I had about installing reverse camera to show on factory screen.

Wow, very nice unit but what a price... I'll stick to my Becker BE 7969 for the moment

I replaced the head unit and amp on the DSP carver system to a modern pioneer with Bluetooth and DAB. It cost me circa £2K.

£500-£600 new amp
£200 - new wiring
£100 - new crossovers
£200 - new head unit
£50 - additional bits and bobs like fascia and pioneer wiring harness, etc.
£600 - labour

I could have missed some stuff out.

I am now tempted to replace the Pioneer head unit with a single din which folds out to a double din or stays as a double din. Blocking the 2 middle air vents is of zero concern to me, but what would be is I use one of them currently as a phone holder so it's off or on air con anyway. I would have to find a new way/place to hold my phone in the car and using the side vents is a no go it's too tight and not in an ideal sightline. But I don't really see the benefit tbh. I can always use sat nav on the phone so it would just be for aesthetics. Maybe I will wait til christmas and get it as a present from santa.

The idea of having a single din with a tiny screen for updated nav which costs £1300 for the head unit is baffling. Why not just get a top end single din pioneer for £200 and use your phone? Phones will always be updated to latest Nav and have all the features like live traffic, cameras and stuff.

Yep the price is bit ridiculous for what it is.

Yep the phone is always going to be my go to for navigation etc. I have it on the right hand side as i find it bit easier to operate being right handed.

The main reason for considering this is just to simplify and cleanup the interior a bit, that is the main reason. I am not too bothered about music and having good sound system, I prefer listening to the intake and the custom exhaust that was fitted couple of months ago. But very good point on the price though for what it is, shame there isn't something similar/equivalent that I could find as I really don't like the single din units that are out there. This is the closest to looking "factory" which has a nice interface albeit in a very small screen.

I totally understand the reason behind removing the factory nav screen etc however I have looked into this as a potential idea for future e86 ownership.

- purchase a video composite input device to enable external video inputs to the factory nav screen.
https://naviks.com/i-22264676-2003-2008-bmw-z4-series-e85-e86-hdmi-video-interface.html

- universal carplay/android auto device utilising this video input with audio via factory aux.
https://incartec.co.uk/product/Universal-Smartphone-integration-Wireless-Carplay-Android-Auto-interface-27-8CP11

haven't completed the research however this would help keep everything looking factory with all modules tucked away in the center console or behind the dash

Cheap solution but has been working fine so far, here is the extract from this thread:

So decided to go down this route as temporary solution:

Opened up the vent:
001(7).jpg

Fish the magsafe cable down to the panel below heating controls:
001(6).jpg

Using traction line, fish the cable down:
001(5).jpg

Pull out the centre console and pass the wire down:
001(4).jpg

Pushing the usb c cable end point between the gap takes a little angling but pretty straight forward:
001(3).jpg

Simply unplug and lay the cable flat to close:
001(2).jpg

Pretty clean result. The wire is bit bent so need to check that but one for later:
001(1).jpg

With phone:
001.jpg

Parts used:
1. Iphone magsafe cable from Apple
2. Car holder from Amazon:
61DCtfbueYL._AC_SL1500_.jpg
3. Having trim removal kit made it easy

Clipping items to the air vent is not what i wanted to do but this works for now. Eagerly awaiting result of this thread "OEM style phone mount for e85/e86" https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=130242

Speak with a local car audio specialist they may have carried this out on another car or same car. The one I took mine too had done the same job previously on a other Z4 with DSP carver system so he knew exactly what had to be done.

These guys updated the radio in mine:

https://www.audiofile-incar.co.uk/

so they may know. I have seen that they have fitted this Porsche radio in an early 00s Porsche and they do a lot of BMWs so hopefully they can help if you drop them a line.

Just in case it helps they have this vid of mine that they did a few years back - the facia sits more flush compared to that in the video as there was a gap in the corner which they must have sorted after this was filmed, although appreciate it is not everyone's cup of tea but it is set up so I can quickly swap it all back to stock:

£60 alternative?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/354029087584?hash=item526dc72b60:g:YlwAAOSwfVJiZ74D

I've no idea if it's any good, but if you want a single DIN unit with carplay / android auto / etc. it ticks all the boxes.

They are the ones I am talking to. I have got quote for sound deadening from them. The guy I am speaking to, Gary, said they can add the Porsche system. Looks like they are pretty competent. I am planning to drive to their place on Friday to discuss it but more although Gary seems to be on holiday. Let’s see.

After I posted this I have actually come across few more :)

This one has everything including reverse camera. Only gripe is that it is bit too modern than I want. Damn Porsche one is perfect but it is a lot of money plus has no reverse camera. But good to see few more option than before.

With all the features that has you have to wonder how good it is at that price. Even a half decent basic head unit costs more.

Re-using the original screen looks like the best option in my opinion. Especially if you don't want to use a single din with pop up screen or single din with mounted screen.

Does none of the big brands do a screen on their single din options? Sony, Kenwood, alpine or pioneer.

Can you trust sound quality on the cheap Chinese units?
