Fitting new rear lights…

Hello,

I’ve just taken delivery of two brand new rear lights to replace my current ones.

Upon looking on YouTube for fitting advice, one video suggested to apply a bead of clear silicone around the lamp between the lens and the case. Has anyone else done this?

Also, am I right in saying when fitting the rubber gaskets, the first part (red arrow) sits on the boot side, and the (yellow arrow) remains on the outside?

Thanks in advance.IMG_4345.jpegIMG_4346.jpegIMG_4347.jpeg

Its best to fit these with no gloop..maybe a little silicone spray / rubber treatment at most..

Correct its a double edged lip seal..the two seals sit either side of the rear metal tail..

They often don't seat fully so check carefully that it's properly seated all the way around!

Ok, great thanks. I’ve got some silicone grease to aid fitment of seals. No rush to do it, might be waiting a while for a clear dry day so I can take my time!

Also got some blank rubber grommets and sealant to seal up the unused 3rd hole.

I just put some duct tape on both sides of the hole..when the light fitting is in there's very little room for water to get in vis the hole..FWIW..

Thanks, that’s good to know. I already had a selection box of these grommets so will just use them up.

That's not required and definitely not suggested in the BMW documentation.

Pull the inside of the gaskets carefully into the trunk before fixing the two nuts.

07147162569 is the partnumber of the official "protection foil" / "Schutzfolie"

Thanks for this. Is the protection foil the part recommended for covering the 3rd mounting hole?

Yes.
It is a circular transparent sticker for about 2€ each. Don't buy it from ebay, these offers are way too expensive.

But, a waterproof tape on both sides of the 3rd hole is sufficient.

I'm on my 9th E89 and the first thing I do now is strip the boot to check for water ingress, look at the state of the roof motor and check the rear lights.

Most of the early cars have had a least one rear light unit replaced due to failed LED's if not both and it's surprising how many times the rubber gaskets are not fitted correctly - to cover the 3rd hole I just use Gorilla tape.

Well I took the break in the weather to get these fitted.

Bit daunting, but took my time and everything went in / back together well. Triple checked the gaskets were all fitted properly, third hole sealed with a grommet and a coating of sealant either side.

Looking at the old ones, the lens has warped from the case, huge gap for water ingress.

All in all, delighted.IMG_4358.jpegIMG_4357.jpegIMG_4359.jpegIMG_4356.jpeg

Water gets in through the seal between the bit screwed on the back to the main case.
Perhaps by now Marelli have solved that problem...but i doubt it.
