Fitting? Gaptech - Worth the outlay - Now buying.

Mine came with one fitted but believe me if I bought another car that didnt it would be getting one pronto. After having one you just wouldn't want to be without it and BMW really should have supplied the cars with the features a gaptech give you.

As well as the benefits already mentioned, one of the best things for me is the ability to park in a tight space and get out with the roof down (which is much easier) then walk off as the roof raises without either having to hold the key in the door lock or stand at the car holding the button down hoping it works. The reverse is true when you come back to the car and the roof is safely stowed in seconds, before your even opening the door.

Agree, getting caught out as the traffic light goes green with your finger still desperately pressing the button is just embarrassing!

Nothing worse, everyone just thinks your roofs packed in! I've never understood why the E85 roof doesn't work up to circa 30mph like a lot of other convertibles of similar age. What's the E89 like in this respect Rob?

goes up & down on the wing, later lci models have strengthened roof hinges and will allow operation up to 25mph, because of its construction it doesn't present a "parachute" to the wind as it unlatches from the screen (rear screen pivots above roof before the main body unlatches)
As standard it still needs the button pressed for the duration like the e85, I've just fitted one of these to improve matters

Hi guys,

I just bought my E85, but the red led light of the roof/ is always flashing if I open the roof, because the little sensor that reads the roof is completely and fine opened is not in its site because the last owner broken the part/piece where this sensor had to be located, so if I open the roof my red light is always flashing.

So u know or think this can be a problem to have working fine this Gaptech module ??, my worries is that the module think the roof is not completely down and the pump still working long time and burn it.

I completed my Gaptech installation last weekend. I'm no fan of Scotchlock connectors - in fact the best advice about these I've ever found is to grip each connector in turn firmly between your thumb and forefinger and deposit it in the nearest bin! I was going to either cut the wires and use male/female bullet connectors, or alternatively make soldered splice connections. But then I discovered these little beauties:



They are lever wire connectors made by Ideal Industries. They're sold by Toolstation and Screwfix, and they get rave reviews. They are absolutely perfect for the job. For the thinner wires I cut away about 15mm of insulation then bent the exposed wire back on itself in the centre and twisted it to form a single (thicker) wire to push into one port of a two-port connector, then inserted the relevant wire from the Gaptech unit into the other port. For the thicker wire I cut it, stripped back each end and inserted them into two ports of a three-way connector, inserting the remaning Gaptech wire into the third.

I then wrapped wires with Tesa 51608 PET wiring loom tape (as used by BMW and most other car manufacturers), and I also wrapped each connector in tape as well to stop any vibration rattles. Then a mini disaster struck! I have a single garage, so have to do all my work outside on the drive. I noticed the sky was starting to turn dark, and a few seconds later it started to rain. So I hastily got up from the drivers seat to push the car into the garage. Unfortunately the scissors I was using to cut the tape were in my lap, and as I got up they made a large gouge in my lower steering wheel spoke cover plate. It's really annoying as the car is in immaculate condition, and this gouge really shows!

You can buy a new set of spoke covers from BMW, but there's no way I'm paying the £128 they charge for them! I've bought some 3M vinyl wrap to cover the spokes, which will be an over-winter project. But ideally I'd like to keep the car 100% original and replace the damaged cover with a new one. So if anyone happens to have a unmarked silver lower steering wheel spoke cover going spare, please let me know!
