Hi all i have a 2004 2.5 Z4 and have been offerd a 2003 3.0 6 speed gear box. Has any body on here or now of any body that has changed their 5 sp for a 6 sp and what was involved.
Cheers

Should be straightforward, can't think of anyone else having done it before. Are you paying for the 'box and/or fitting of it?

It's a very straight forward swap, but there's a lot of small parts to consider; make sure you don't fall for the same mistake many people do which is forgetting to change the gear selector mechanism, the six speed one is shorter.
You will also need a Propshaft & New Clutch kit since they're both different are NOT compatible.
Change your prop doughnut and that large bush (can't remember the name of it) between the prop and the gearbox while you're there. grease up the prop splines too. If you can check the condition of the input bearing on the gearbox, make sure it's not got any play in it, probably worth changing just to be sure.
(all these are maintenance stuff you're saving on later, while the car is in bits anyway).

Just wondering
Are the gear ratios in the 2.5l lower than the 3.0l to account for the lower power and torque . 3.0l in top gear = 2100rpm @ 60mph
Would the 2.5 struggle with a higher ratio box
Would you need to change the final drive ratio

The gear ratios on both boxes 1 through 5 are the same (or mabe 0.0# difference, 6spd is ever so slightly shorter) the 6th gear is an overdrive gear.
The 2.5l has enough power to drive that gear altough you wont have the torque required to overtake with the same haste as the 3.0l at 70; you may need to change down.
However whilst cruising at 70 in your overdriven 6spd with your existing final drive, you'll be doing much better MPG over long journeys. For normal around town driving with the odd motorway blasts, it's just not worth it unless you shorten your final drive. but then you'll be back to where you started with just an extra gear in the mix and will have to change up to 3rd to hit 60.

So what we going to need for 6 speed swap in 2.5 is completed tranny with gears selector, new clutch kit with fly wheel .. also the drive shaft is that you mean ?
