Fitted my New Steering Wheel

Evening guys and girls.

Thought I'd pop this up as there was some discussion around airbag lights a few months ago on I think Beedub's thread.

I found some time finally today to fit the Alcantara Momo Mod.07 Wheel & Boss I've had lying about since about Feb this year!

IMG_20230928_161514.jpg

I haven't taken step by step photos, but the following youtube video was extremely useful in figuring out which wires related to the two airbag plugs,and the horn;

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=chris+fix+steering+wheel

I used 6x Bread board connectors (per the video recommendation above) but I glued the female connectors together to make in essence a replacement plug for the 6-pin plug for the two airbags, and the horn.

Link to bread board connectors (You'll want a few Male to Female, and Female to Female ones):

I wont bore you with the horn wiring as that was extremely straightforward, but there seems to be a lot of anecdotal evidence on the internet that the BMW ECUs are very sensitive to what resistance Resistors are used to replace the Airbag. I'm sure there are many ways of doing it but the way I did it worked, so if you're looking for minimal fuss and just making it work, here you go!

To be clear there are 2-off Airbag plugs, each with 2 pins. you need an airbag resistor for each pair for the Airbag light to go out properly.

I purchased 2-off the below Airbag resistors, but promptly broke one,snapping the prong in one of the female bread board connectors. Because I couldn't be bothered to wait for another one to be delivered, I instead used the remaining ebay one, and also the Airbag resistor supplied with the MOMO Boss.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/353554543714

Works a charm.

Couple more points to note;

The airbag doesn't come off quite the same way as the E46 one - the holes are angled differently, but the release mechanism (spring bar) is basically the same, so you just have to peer down the holes with a torch to find the bar and then push it with a flat-head screwdriver.

Worth getting the wheel properly centralised, and then removing the key from the ignition to lock the wheel in place. This will make installing the new wheel straight far easier!

When removing the old wheel, first break off the tension of the single central retaining bolt,unwind it a couple of turns and then wiggle/pull/push the wheel to loosen it. This way the wheel will still stay on. If you unwind the bolt the whole way off, and then give the wheel an almighty tug you may knock yourself out as it comes off :lol:

Otherwise that's it I think! Not nearly as difficult as seems to have been made out on the internet! :)

Cheers

Ed

That looks great Ed. :thumbsup:

I hope you have found some time to enjoy your car this year. :driving:

Thanks man :)

Not as much as I'd have liked, but I got the ring trip in, and an evening slot at Donington. It's beena busy 2nd half of the year with a big house move so just not had the time!

Insane how much difference this makes to the feel of the steering! one of my fave things ive changed, and i LOVED the stock wheel, the thickness was definitely robbing / masking the excellent hydro rack of feel. i went with the leather item because im forever seeing badly worn suede S/Ws at work. But the way they glue the leather by hands means the finish is very much "imperfect". Just wish i could have choosen a silver centre section as opposed to black but, it works well with the theme of my interior.

I've yet to drive mine I'll admit but even juts sitting in it post install it feels a country mile better than the oe wheel!

Yeah I went alcantara despite that, I know it'll get a bit mungy but I prefer how it feels to leather, and it's not like the car does loads of miles!

Definitely looking forward to the first drive soon! Fingers crossed for next weekend being a bit sunnier than this one up in derbyshire!

Just a point to help others there is a notch in the steering wheel and the column that helps with realignment when putting the wheel on (if changing OEM to OEM)

I'm late to the game here, but your link to the connectors is really helpful as I was drawing a blank on what to search for.

Sadly your resistor link is broken. Can you confirm what value you bought for the 2x resistors please?

Glad this was helpful to someone! :)

The resistors I used didn't actually show a value - I just got one that was loosely branded as 'fits BMW'.

I did end up using the one in the MOMO Box for one of the resistors - I think you can work out what resistance they are easily enough and just get a second? Alternatively this is basically identical to what I used for the second airbag resistor;

Is this resistors for the airbag light?

You can code the airbags out with NCSExpert, did mine today to check it works. If anyone needs any pointers or instructions, let me know.

Coding out the steering wheel airbag. It then doesn’t show the airbag light on the dash when you remove the airbag. Will work on others too

OK, thanks. I'm doing a lot of research into the control modules, but your coding won't help them sadly.

Yeah, modules is past my pay grade. I’m more of a three blink indicator and stopping warning lights kinda level :rofl:

:lol:
I'd be interested in coding for the airbag modules please, but in a wee while, I've got my hands full with a one month old baby at the moment so the track car definitely doesn't get a look in right now (so my wife says!)

Just checking, coding of the modules or coding out certain airbags out to remove warning lights?

Great. Now I need to go and find the Momo box that I cast into the depths of my shed/workshop/dumping ground.

How did you secure the resistors inside the hub? My living fear is that they are going to be flapping around while I'm driving.

Before you do any research, I'd head here to do some reading: https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2083084

enuff_zed was working on my car at the time, and consensus among clever people seems to be that it's not possible on a prefacelift like mine. There are instructions for how to do it on a facelift in that thread.

All depends on which airbag you want to code out, or if you are fitting fixed back seats, the other parts you need coding out. But its relatively easy. Do you have a copy of NCS Expert, NCS Dummy and a cable?

What year is your car? Is it an early model?
