Fitted my black wheels and winter rubber - interesting. . .

Well, after a freezing Christmas I eventually got around to fitting my black wheels. I weighed them against the original wheels and they are an average of 6.8lbs per wheel lighter than my originals. That's 27.25lbs of un-sprung weight saved which I'm quite pleased about. Not so sure about the colour though. Steph likes them and prefers the black - I'm not yet convinced.

So out for a road test and from the first corner the rear lets go quite easily. I would say the new winter rubber is a lot more controllable than the Goodyear F1s but I was surprised at how easily they could be provoked - under acceleration and on corners. All enjoyable but really surprising. Maybe it's just been too warm the last two days up here. . . .

One thing I have noticed and like is the increase ride comfort. the winter rubber has higher side walls: 40 on the rear and 45 on the fronts (are these ///M sizes?) It's made a difference to the feel in the cabin when hitting imperfections - even speed bumps - a lot quieter and smoother.

Have yet to fit the strut brace - interested to see if that makes any impact.

Some pros + cons there Paul ,
Pics don't show them close enough but they fill the arches nicely & the increase in ride comfort is a noticeable benefit on M sized tyres ( i run the same sizes )
On the sliding out ? Fitting winter rubber isn't like fitting Michelin's after running Sunny's :P they are there to keep you going( &stopping ) safely when the condition's mean a summer tyre would struggle , they are not designed as a performance upgrade or enhancement :D
Did you give them a thrashing with sport button on :driving:

Those wheels do look good Paul - are they 17s ?

As for being slippery, like any other tyre they will need 2-300 miles to scrub in so I think maybe you were experiencing release agent release :D

I love that description Alan, it sounds like an instruction to the tyres... once they have served their induction course

You must feel the car, be one with it, bend it to your will :driving: :D

Depends how wide they are. M's are 225/45 front and 255/40 rear. Just check that they aren't 235 and 265 - this might be too large an increase in rolling radius for the 3.0si to work with.

Interesting comments re. improvement in ride quality. I think they look pretty good with those tyres in a higher profile fitment too.

I'm with you regarding the higher shoulders - nice return on the ride comfort and does fill the wheel arch nicely.

Yep, mr wilks maybe my expectations were too high and yes - the sport button was on, not thrashing but so easy to elicit a slide - far easier than the Goodyear F1s. In a perverse way it makes them safer as at least you know they will let go. . .

Did you see that the wheels are lighter as expected - I was impressed with that.

The photo quality is poor and I haven't down loaded some other shots yet. Absolutely love that Zed you've posted up mr wilks - very similar wheels.

The wheels are 18s staggered fitment Bing - got them as Steph wanted black and I quite fancied the lighter unsprung weight.

Winter rubber is part used, but I still think it will take some miles to mould them to my Zed.

They're looking good Paul, they certainly do fill those wheel arches very nicely, I likey  Interesting comments on how the winters have improved the quality of the ride, mine seem harsher to me but again mine are different size tyres though which must be the difference.

They are 225/45/18 and 255/40/18 so ///M fitment then - they fill the wheel arches nicely so if there is no rubbing then for the benefits of ride I'd consider this fitment on my standard wheels in future.

Glad you weighed them Paul , I did say they were noticeably lighter than other 18s
The style 32s for same bizarre reason are possibly the lightest factory BMW 1 piece wheel i have come across ,
The offsets btw are exactly the same as 108,s.Mv2s etc 8j 47 / 8.5j 50

Think I would prefer a more dished style, though Steph likes them a great deal. Are your tyres 40 fronts and 35? If so it's the difference in shoulder height - I'm surprised that a centimetre diameter can make such a noticeable difference.

I would love to run with ///M size tyres, but I would be worried they would rub, especially with some of the speed bumps I have to negociate daily coupled with the state of some of Edinburghs roads.

Yes standard 40 fronts and 35 rears

Is it possible that the tyres are still "Green", after being stored for a year?

Having said that I did find that the ones we put on were easier to provoke in damp conditions than the Falkens we have on the rest of the year
Mine are Vredstein Xtreme Wintrac tyres.
