But check with mfactory.

Birds auto has instructions for download available on how to fit a quaife, so that gives some pointers on how to look at installation (incl backlash data etc!). they also mention doublechecking the ratio to see if you have the right diff.

I have mine at home waiting for me to have time to fit it. Steve at Grinspeed is a really top bloke and provided fantastic service. Proper nice knowledgeable guys.

What oil did you use Yorkie?

Quaife offers LSD specifically for each model but is almost double the price of an Mfactory. :headbang:

Yes, the mfactory diffs are very nicely priced. I would have gone for mfactory if they had been around 4 years ago with a bmw diff. The LSD is probably the best upgrade I've done on my car. Every sportscar should have one imho.

Though a quaife (850gbp) is still about half the price of an OS giken and 1/3 the price of a drexler, so it's all relative :lol:

If you're not going to do the install yourself, be sure to get a mechanic who knows what he's talking about. Tinkering with diffs is something that normal dealers/garages havent done for 20 years or so (they only replace complete diffs), so the knowledge and ins&outs are not common anymore. Most mechanics already :scratchhead: if you mention a word like backlash, so guys like that absolutely know nothing :rofl:

I fitted mine myself and it's still going strong. Because your not touching the pinion gear it's a pretty easy job. Found the backlash was easy to check.!!
 
One quick question Gentleman!
How much oil should go to the diff? I somewhere found that 1 litre, but my mechanic says it looks like 1l is much less it was before opening the diff..

Always fill diffs til the oil starts coming out of the fill hole.
 
from what I remember it was 1.1L OR 1.2.

You cant overfill it as it will just come out the filling hole.
 
A really interesting thread and its on my wish list. Am I correct in thinking that the LSD would work for a 3.0 si auto?

Thanks to those in the know for imparting their knowledge.
 
Yest, it will, but I think you have a different final ratio in 3.0si auto than manual, so you will have to make sure you get a correct unit

Hello,

I recently installed an Mfactory LSD to my Z4 2.5. Purpose wise the diff is perfect, now more inner tire spinning.

But I have two sounds that I would like to know if someone else has noticed after installing an LSD.

1) When at standstill and putting gear into first I hear (and feel) a thump coming from the diff. I have read on other bmw e46 forums that others have the same sound. Is this normal?
2) When going downhill with gear engaged or sometimes when starting to move on a turn I hear a tak tak sound coming from what I believe is the center axle.

I did not have these sounds before the lsd install. :headbang:
Any advice welcome.
 
No it was installed at a specialized tuning shop. They are known for their knowledge of diffs. I swapped the whole diff from another car that was totalled. Front end though, the back was completely intact.
 
So you have no idea what the history of this diff is or what?
(I understand that it was already on the totalled car?)

A thumb could also come from the rear diff bushing. Make sure it's torqued properly and not worn.
 
The lsd was installed at the same shop. The previous car was a supercharged Z4 2.2. I talked to the guy, he did not mention any problem, but then again not everyone is as strict as me when it comes to sounds.
