First world problem I know- replace my commuter.

Apologies as I'm really just thinking aloud after commenting on Stuart's thread earlier.

My motors: 06 Z4M 43K ish, 00 330Ci 140K ish.

I've managed about 5000 miles a year the last 2 years on both cars, although the Z4M was mainly on unnecessary journeys on days off. I hate leaving it at the Heathrow car park and take the rust bucket instead: A mechanically good 330Ci that has the rust worm. The M4 isn't the natural habitat of an ///M anyway!

I find myself wondering if I'm going to keep the Z4M forever. I'm looking at replacing the X reg 330Ci as it's 140k now, I suspect big bills soon and it's very rusty.

The commute is a 150 mile round trip, but not daily, mostly on motorway. But as younger 330Ci's, 3.0 or ///M E86's, early E90 330/335 even E46 M3's are great value (if you get an unmolested one). I'm lucky enough to be facing a bizarre set of choices, this is my dilemma:

1. There is nothing out there at the moment which can replace the Z4M for me (a fun car for anything but the commute and a stupidly short range).

2. The replacements for my ageing commuter are all (performance wise) similar to the Z4M. With 2 performance cars, I suspect I'll just drive the one that isn't in the garage (ie. the much loved Z4M).

Half of me would like something like a small Fiat (we've had plenty before), but maybe a 500 Abarth this time and the other half longs for a straight 6 for the motorway like a bog standard 335 as a direct upgrade for the 330Ci.

I would love to hear suggestions.

ps.

It has to be reliable.
I don't want anything dull. (I realise the first 2 points may be incompatible).
More than 4 cylinders, or an interesting type of engine.
No Diesel. It is the work of the devil and I respect my neighbours ears in the morning, plus we already have one which is fully utilised by the Lady Wife,(A5 2.0 Tdi quattro).........or persuade me.
A manual gearbox.
If it's front wheel drive and over 200bhp, you're having a laugh.
It has to be over 200bhp..... or be very light!
Oh and less than 15k...... :D

I would love to hear your ideas........

First of all, don't even consider selling the M. Seriously. Unless it's to me...in a different life...where I don't have a 6 month old baby.

Second of all, get yourself a 335i, 335d or 330d (mapped) and have some irregular commuting fun for not a lot of mular. I sold my MC a month ago as I needed 4 seats. Instantly regretted it and bought an AUC E90 335i which wont do many miles either but is more usable for a new family of three.

535d? Quiet, fast, economical and on AUC for c15k fully loaded. Yes it's diesel but it's faster than a lot of petrol powered machinery

Quiet and fast yes, not so sure on the economical. My brother had one and struggled to get 30mpg from it general driving.

How about this....

You could also get a lowish mileage 550i as well but I think they were all auto so wouldn't meet your criteria.

Rare as chickens teeth too.

The manual saloons are as rare as white Z4MRs, but there are a few more tourings with manual boxes - neither are easy to find though :P

There's a few auto's for <£15k on Autotrader, most of which had sensible mileage. A hell of car for that kind of cash. I assume it doesn't come with some of the histrionics of the E60 M5 as well.

Hmm - I'm a little puzzled by the responses - sorry!

By my reckoning, if you did 5000 miles last year in the commuter @150 miles round trip, thats less than 1 trip a week, right? So, if it were me, I'd also consider ...

Dispose of the commuter, trade the Z and you open up a whole new range of possible alternatives. May just be me, but 10k a year means I don't care too much about fuel consumption or having a dedicated commuter. Just a thought .. :)

What about a mk5 golf R32?

Practical, not to shouty, interesting engine (sound pretty good), 4wd for winter commutes/b-road shenanigans, pretty quick, well built and well within budget leaving money for a few bits.

Plenty of manual cars around and quite a few have the great recaro seats.

Thanks for the replies.

A 335 is certainly up there, but finding a manual in proving tiresome. I'll have a look for R36's Stuart, sounds interesting. I always found golfs a bit underwhelming, although an R32 might work.

I can't decide between a Phaeton and a Nissan Sunny though! :D

Only 2 x doors and no nav but...

There's 1 AUC manual 335i on BMW's site. £14k 2006, 39k miles, bluetooth, nav, silver with black leather. Rare car the manual 335i. I reckon you'd get a great deal on that car if you start haggling just before month end!

Good thinking!

Thread resurrection time!

I struggled to find a 335 Coupe in manual last year so I spent £800 to get my 330Ci through the MOT in November. Having done that, it owed me another winter of motorway work!

Today, out of the blue I sold it after a chat in the pub last weekend. Cash. Happy daze!

Of course the first thing I did was go out and test drive a car.............an Abarth 595

Thought it was hilarious and it is probably an itch I have to scratch. Multiple visits to BMW and Audi are dieselpressing me and the cars are getting so bloody big. 435's are even bigger than E90's. The 235 is about the right size but it'll be a couple of years before someone else has swallowed the big depreciation.

There are so many different colours and styles it may take a few weeks for something special to catch my eye. But in the meantime I get to drive the little red bastard to work and back. :driving:

I have to admit, with the weather improving that's as exciting as the prospect of a new car!
