Hi

Got myself a 40k 2003 roadster with the smg

Now although I think it's fantastic im concerned with high bills if it goes wrong!

So I was considering gettin a used car warrenty from warrenty direct for £510. This includes everything including servicing unforseens, mot failure and wear and tear.

My question is though, with the smg being so low mileage is it unlikely to go wrong? And also,

Have any off you ever had experience with these companies In the past.

This is my first post and the site is proving to be a great resource so fatr

Many thanks

Had my dual mass flywheel go between 50-60k.
£3000+ bill covered by my Mondial warranty.

Warranty Direct would be the pick of the independents on cover / value but do confirm the SMG gearbox is specifically covered .
Not all warranty companies cover DSG or SMG gearboxes as the bills for repair are often in the 0000's :o

Yeh I done a spot of googling and discovered that about Mondial.

The thing that gets me is the 90 day exclusion period, meaning you only really get 9 months cover surely instead of 12 advertised!

Warranty Direct can be squeezed pretty easily to give you 15months for price of 12 8) I managed this with a VW touareg a few years back .
Warrantywise i'm pretty sure won't cover the box & also your car being 10yrs old some companies will wriggle out of most claim's under their "wear & tear " clause  IE they assume a certain timespan or miles covered mean's many component's will have reached their acceptable lifespan & therefore they should not be expected to reimburse you
it is a minefield so best of luck

I found that, was going to get the warranty direct one and then read a few horror stories!

Not easy to decide to pay for a warranty or save the money myself to budget for repairs.

It's just the fact that I don't want to be paying 510 quid for something that's not worth the paper it's written on in the event I stop gettin gears one day or something!

I was also looking at the AA one where they contribute 500 quid to a repair up to 5 times with a 35 quid excess....

Only costs 65 quid and gets much better reviews with much lighter outlay only 500 is a very small amount in an smg failure lol.

Mr wilks, did you find warranty direct paid willingly when you placed a claim

Thanks for the input so far guys

CDG175 / i have had 2 policy's with WD but fortunately neither car ever failed so no experience of claiming other than what was reported through the Touareg forum . That was all positive i have to say .
Looking from the outside on your situation i don't know what cash you tied up in your Z but even with low miles (40k) i would guess sub £6k ?
A warranty on your car IMO is only worth it if the SMG is covered . If not then forget it . Its not worth the £500/yr
A decent fail on that box is going to be £2500,ish so isn't far off selling car for spares
avoid emotions  its mathematics
Personally i would bank £500/yr in the hope that 3 yrs later all is well

My Z4 SMG is now on 98k with no problems

That's great to hear some more positive reports of SMG. Mine's only done 33k so hopefully some way off any real SMG potential problems.

Coincidentally I have just taken a warrany with WD and read the section on "automated manual gearboxes" quite carefully and pretty sure SMG will be covered under this section - that's the Secure Care level of WD.

Having spent 20+ years in financial services I'm as cynical as they come on policy wordings and was suspicious when he threw in BMW dealer rates, which having listened carefully to the post sale tele messgae sounded as if you needed BMW main dealer servicing done too - which I had clarified - you do not. Any VAT registered garage is fine for servicing.

I would have been happy with Inde rates but do recognise if it's something like SMG it probably requires a trip to a main dealer.

Hope this helps the OP.

Typically my drivers window has just failed - something that might be covered from day 1 - it is only wear & tear cover that has a 90 day exclusion. I'm not however going to be claiming for such a minor problem in my first week of warranty though !
