First Thoughts - 28i M-Sport

Well I've been driving my new 28i M-Sport round all weekend and thought I'd post up my thoughts. First of all, am I pleased with it? Absolutely. It's the most comfortable 2 seater I've ever owned and the interior is just such a nice place to be. No squeaks or rattles, relatively quiet (apart from the RFT noise - which isn't that bad really) and it just feels so well put together.

I thought the Sport mode may make it a bit of a harsh ride but I prefer it over Comfort mode, primarily because of the way the car seems to come alive with it in Sport.

As for the engine, what a peach. It really is just effortless power and it pulls from way down in the revs in any gear. Took it out on the twisty roads today with the roof down and it really did sound great. I like the turbo whistle and subtle exhaust growl. I've not pushed it yet but I expect it'll be a seriously quick motor once I've got a bit more confidence with it.

So far I've used half a tank of fuel and that's got me 200 miles. Computer says it's averaging about 30 mpg which I am quite disappointed with. BMW must have just plucked their 41 mpg out of thin air because it just won't do it. Oh well, I didn't buy it to worry about that I suppose!

Overall though, I'm more than happy with my purchase and I'm glad I opted for the 28i rather than the 20i. As has been said on here previously, if you're thinking of getting one, test the 28i as well and I'll make a bet that you justify that extra money for that power.

Lol never believe what the manufacturer claims about MPG!
 
Congrats on the motor, but WE NEED PICS!!!

My 28i is averaging around 32mpg at present but that's on a very urban cycle. I have seen it give 40mpg over a weekend run to the coast, and once I coaxed 45mpg out of it driving very steadily at about 70mph on the M1 for 50 miles or so.

Anyhow, as you say, nothing to worry about. In comparison to the depreciation going on the petrol cost is peanuts!

in terms of the mpg. i was in a lexus garage yesterday as my mate is upgrading his q7 to an rx450. i asked the salesman about the mpg claims of the new hybrid as it claims to have an average of 45mpg. he said that nowadays manufacturers arent allowed to post the mpg. the engine is sent to the government and they do their own independant tests on fuel economy, emissions etc and then present these to the manufacturers hence why they are miles out to the everyday economy we are getting. kinda makes sense as the minimum economy im getting is 26mpg as opposed to the claimed 40mpg
 
Pleased your enjoying your new motor :thumbsup: the mpg claims do make you laugh, I still think around 30 mpg for a performance petrol isn't too bad & it will get better if the weather ever warms up!
 
No way you will get 45mpg from an RX450h

In my old one the hybrid system was only of real benefit in stop-start traffic, and then it only had a range of a few miles

So all it really does is close the gap between the urban mpg and the combined mpg

If you do a lot of motorway driving it just behaves like a big petrol engined SUV

As for the Adaptive Suspension Maniac, it just has a button next to teh gear lever which says Comfort, Sport or Sport +. Is that Adaptive Suspension? I thought that was a button which was available on every Z4?
 
Congrats Nezzy, i'm picking up my 2.8 this Friday, took it out for a test drive last Friday, and completely agree with you, the engine is a peach! Putting your foot down gives you that surge of power that I didnt think was quite there with the 2.0. Your right about the ride as well, considering the M had 19's, I actually thought the ride was softer than my golf GT that has lower suspension and 17's. Can't wait to take it for a proper drive this weekend. Let's hope the blizzards die down by then!

Interesting, maybe the government make them look good so we take the mpg into account and then bingo, in reality we pay more tax on the fuel :(

Ah, yes that button is normal but I asked about adaptive suspension (a pricey optional extra) as you mentioned ride quality changing based on sport/normal etc.. Ride won't change unless you specced adaptive suspension.
 
This is interesting I am with the OP I drive around most of the time with the sport mode selected and the auto gearbox in sport mode as the car seems more taught and responsive - but this may be psychological. I guess the sort mode in the gear box makes gear changes later and faster , what does the sport button do to the setup of the car ?

In terms of mpg I get early 20's but then again I drive around everywhere is sport mode and love the sound and feeling of the car accelerating fast using the flappy paddles - i guess the novelty may wear off after a while and then I might get decent mpg

DDC (normal/sport/sport+) affects throttle response, steering weight/sensitivity and traction control levels. Also changes shift points and ferocity in autos. If adaptive suspension is fitted, changes damping rates. Auto and adaptive suspension are optional components of course. You'll know if you have adaptive as the car, certainly in sport + mode, becomes very harsh in terms of ride, smooth road/track use only really unless you don't mind having the car bang on every little imperfection. In cars with DCT (35i/35is) the shift rates in sport/sport+ are back breaking at full power.
 
Interesting. I could have sworn the ride firmed up with it in Sport but as above, it may just be my imagination.

I have the manual one so the faster gear change I don't know about.

I'm going to take note this weekend though in terms of the suspension and see whether there is a difference.

Overall though, still loving the zed. :thumbsup:

The Govt don't test the cars, the manufacturers do, albeit to a set routine.

However, the testing regime was drawn up some time ago and has "get outs" for automatic cars as automatics were not as sophisticated then, e.g. in part of the test a manual has to accelerate in top gear an auto is allowed to change down.
What has happened is that manufacturers now tune their cars to deliver phenomenal performance in the test that cannot be repeated on the road.
