First Test Drive of an M

Not really, as the Z4M came out in 2006 65k is below average milage already so add two more years 65K will be fairly low milage for a car of that age. Most people dont buy the cars to do 12-15k a year more like 6k so people wont be put off by 65k I dont think. As time goes by it will be harder and harder to find low milage cars.

Yeah you are exactly right with normal cars, i just wander if the same applied to more specialist cars and roadsters especially. For example a 3.0 wouldnt have any worries, but becuase its an M, do people worry and think they dont want a High Mileage one. Im not sure!

To be honest, i will probably say sod it and deal with the outcome at a later date, might get run over buy a bus tomorrow, so all the worrying would be pointless!

It would just be nice to find the "right one", but wandering with only a few about whether i will have to compromise something, or just hold out.

There's M roadsters on here that have 70k on them without any problems and E46 M3s can have over 100k on them and still drive fine. As Tom says in two years 66k will be below average miles on a 06 car and if it has been properly serviced and looked after it will sell no problem.

Personally, I'd rather buy a car that's been well used by an enthusiast who has looked after the car and used it regularly than some 5,000 mile garage queen that might have all sorts of issues when it starts being used regularly.

Ye as Sammyz says it can turn full turn with cars that haven't been used much, when you start using them properly things may start going wrong. At the end of the day find one you like and has something in between there are a lot of cars with 40-55k around, got mine with 46k which I though was too much really, but got a 2yr BMW warranty to give me piece of mind. There is a lot of haggling to be done on these cars ATM.

hi rob, just been through your dilemma, all the if's and buts and what if this breaks or that fails, i know its frustrating as hell , iremember the same 5 years ago when i bought my m roadster, panicking when i started reading about vanos issues ,but i had that car for five years, did 3k ayear ,never missed a beat gave me so much pleasure then i sold it and only got a thousand pounds less than i paid for it. never went near a main dealer service dept but have a great relationship with their parts dept who are just a1 ( plug for simon and the guys at ocean falmouth ) i now have a 2008 4m coupe which i am still finding my way around, but which has so much soul i just love it , and yes it crashes and clunks just like everyone on here said it would, but is pretty much normal and you learn to drive them accordingly, my point is we can talk ourselves out of buying cars like this for a thousand reasons, but like you say we may always regret it or wonder what may have been, I say buy one, drive it love it for what it is, far from a daily driver , far from perfect , and far far from the rep mobiles that most drivers satisfy themselves with, if after having it for a year or whatever it does'nt work for you, whats the worst can happen ? ,you'll dip acouple of grand if you had to sell it in a hurry, but you would have had it and done it. a few years back I always wanted a 72 vette and spent 3000 quid travelling around the country looking , but could'nt quite bring myself to buy one due to either body or mechanical issues etc etc, saw some minters, and some dogs, quite often it was the doggy looking ones that drove like new and the mint ones like tractors, but within all the cars i looked at I probably turned down 5 that I should have bought but did'nt . when i decided that a 30 yr old car was maybe to much of a dream and started looking at the z's, i thought just buy one and worry about issues WHEN they happen not IF they happen. and you know what, not one regret, ever. hope your quest is succesful rob, good luck.

Cool, I will use that then when i haggle!

I do intend to use it, not just look at it. I guess thats the thing when you get a limited run of cars, there isnt alot about, so its hard to find the right one.

I too would like a AUC car. I will have to see what comes up.

Thanks mate, i think it will happen, just like you say if you read to much or spend too much time thinking about it, or ask for too many opinons, you end up getting talked out of it. I had the most fun i have ever had in a car on Tuesday (well almost but thats another story) when i test drove the roadster. I just need to remember that and find one.

Annoyingly the one i thought seemed perfect which i was going to see tomorrow a few hours away has now sold. Going to have to find the next one to look at now.

Ye well if it helps..

When I bought mine it was top money so haggled £1000 off the list price which wasnt hard I dont think but managed to get an extra £1000 out of my trade in car although they gave me a crap price and sold it a week later for 2k less than I paid for it 2 yrs previous... bs! but anyway it was ready for INS II (about £900), needed new tyres all round (mich PS around £1000), needed pads all round (£200), all the wheels needed a refurb (£400) and got all of that eventually by haggling. I also got a 2 year warranty (worth about £1600) by pushing and refusing to buy it, took two weeks but was worth it.

That tots up especially if your buying privately as it wont have cost BMW much for that lot but it would have cost me over 3.5k if I needed to do that all from a private buy.

Also My car had some problems straight away and had £1500 worth of warranty work done. Now the value of my car privately probs would have been £16k but having to spend that to get it exactly what I wanted would have been about 5k so looking at 20k all in to have it in a state that I would be happy with. I payed £18k for mine which was premium from BMW but in the end it was worth it... it you tot the difference I bought myself some CSLs with the money I would have saved.

Now not everyone agrees with me, but it was worth it for me as the cars aren't getting any younger and im not particularly mechanically minded so I need them to sort it for me. I also dont expect to buy a car and spend a lot of money on it straight away if there are problems and my warranty has already paid for itself.

But then its not all B+W like that many private cars are very good but the fact is maintenance is expensive and so are repairs so that piece of mind is def worth it. Now I have a car im very happy with and has run perfectly since not a hitch and hopefully will stay like that until its next service.

Dont forget that you don't need an AUC to get the BMW warranty, and they can be had for a lot less than the AUC £1k (or more) premium you will pay.
If you buy an unmarked car then you won't need a BMW garage to put right the previous owners neglect, which in itself says a lot about the car's history.

Thanks Guys. All really useful.

I just basically need to find the right one, and sell mine.

I currently live in Hampshire, but im from Truro, so head back down to see friends and family. A blast around some roads in cornwall would be awesome!

As far as bike racks are concerned on the mc its a bit tricky as the glass won't stand any stress so need to look into fixing a plate on the back for a bike rack , not sure where this would fix either ?

Not my photo, but looks a good way to mount?

Fml.. That looks so bad. Putting much strain on the top of the window.. Don't think it was designed to support the weight of bikes. Would be surprised if the glue didn't unstick over time.

Don't put anything on the glass hatch , have spoken to a bmw dealer and to two bike shops and thule who make very good racks , they say they don't make one for an mc . If anyone knows of a cycle rack that fits please put the info on here !!

Steve , the problem is if one wants to go on hols and take 2 bikes as we do then you can't get anything in the boot so bikes must hang outside somewhere. Its bleeding frustrating as had to go in the rav 4 instead last week which is nowhere near as much fun as driving the black z4 mc !!!!

go for have the m its not a problem they are built to drive and throw around i will be down in cornwall in afew weeks time with mine .i will love it down there as long as it dont rain :driving:

Clonks are normal. They're a standard feature of the getrag boxes and nothing to worry about

AFAIK the M has a ZF gearbox? :scratchhead:
"What type of transmission is used in the E86 M Coupe?
All E86 M Coupes are equipped with a ZF Type H 6-speed manual gearbox featuring the following ratios: 4.35 (1), 2.50 (2), 1.66 (3), 1.23 (4), 1.00 (5), 0.85 (6). This is mated to a 3.62:1 final drive with M Variable Differential Lock."
