Before I bought the car the roof had new motor £800 bill ect this was done in 2012 I got the car 2013 .today is the first time I've wanted to put roof down since the summer just to clean inside the rear window inside..... so I push the button the windscreen motor makes it's noise the roof moves a few mm at the front then the rear motor is just wining away as normal the windows come half way down as normal but the roof don't complete it's job. When I press the roof close button
the roof moves back down windows up ect so could the front catches need greasing as it seems it's not unlocking fully at the front?

If the motor is whirring, is the red release handle pulled out in the boot?

Open boot, and then just inside at the top on the left. It pulls out and rotates 90 degrees to disengage the motor, reverse to re-engage. Hopefully it's out and that's all it is!

The red handle is not pulled out Ben . I just Spoke to my mechanic friend on the phone he says it points to the catches being slightly seized as most people don't think about keeping these parts lubed so Tuesday he's gonna manually get roof open and lube them up as all motors are working as normal as u can hear the catches move but not fully I'll let you know the score Tuesday : ) Thanks

The catch's are electrically operated unfortunately, but let us know how you get on. Sounds a strange one.

There's a red handle in the boot to manually release and two of you can operate it both ways then.

Update....... Finally took the car to my mechanic friend he's got the roof off and turns out it's the main motor that's gone it's still spinning but blowing micro switches so it's a new main motor for me : (

If the other motor was fitted in 2012 it may be still covered under BMW's 2 year parts warranty. Have you the bill for the purchase of the motor from BMW by the previous owner?

The last motor was fitted at some vw specialist at £800 lol that might be saying something . When I looked at the bill it was two years October just gone so no chance of warranty.
My man is a genius and he don't leave anything unturned he's a M3 specialist/racer so this time everything will be done properly as the bolts/screws where missing from the boot panel after Vw did the last motor.
if u look this site click pictures scroll to the boot space picture u will two of the bolts in the body work that mine had missing : (

Update : Car back all done £150 Motor dryed lubed and protected on the outside to keep the moisture off : ) I can't tell u what he done apart from a call saying I've fixed your motor and saved you a hep of cash. As said before he's a genius and loves a challenge : )
