First Roadster 2.5L v 3.0L purchase help...

Hello all, I am really excited to have made my decision on a Z4 purchase. I have found a 2005 89K miles 2.5L M-5speed with sport button in 9.5/10 condition. I am pondering holding out for a 3.0L or an automatic. My driving style is more of enjoying corners at posted speed rather than driving above it. I do like being able to pass other cars on the Rocky Mountain roads here.

Will I be best served waiting for the 3.0L? Will the 2.5L be up to handling a mountain pass corner at 65MPH?

Anyone want to weigh in on the auto response on the open two lane road.

-Thanks

the v6 in both have plenty of power and torque for brisk driving and overtaking. 3.0l are better for cruising due to the six speed but if its just for weekend fun then it depends on your need for power

Ok great info. So the 6 speed gearing is better for cruise, highway speeds? Can you expand on why you think this? This is important as my Z4 will be my commuter car with some highway time. More important is the road trips of 600 plus miles i plan on taking.

v6 ???? :?

The 2.5i has plenty poke for most drivers.

Why not test drive both, and that'll give you a better idea of the cars' capabilities?

Welcome to the forum

I would say wait for a 3.0, you sound as if that's the one you want, if you get the 2.5 you will spend much of your time wishing you had, until you bite the bullet and swap it for the bigger engine.

Great info on here. Thanks for the welcome Adamski. Nice looking Z4 there Jamie. The Z4 I am looking at here in Washington would convert to 7643£(12k). That's even with a replaced front fender. The work to the car was unbeknownst to the dealer, so they say, ya right. A nice clean '06 here runs 10191£($16k).

I think you are right sars. I would love to pickup the 3.0. I think I will be passing on this 2.5L now that I know the left fender and light have been replaced. Really don't want a problem car if it has front end damage.

I have a question on handling at highway speeds. The car tracks strait on flat pavement. I drove it on a road with shallow ruts from wear in the lanes. The car would try and steer or drift about from side to side in the lane. Is this a sign alignment is out? Anyone else experience this?

That's called 'tramlining' something the zed suffers from. Non run flat tyres will help reduce it, but sadly it's a characteristic of the car

You actually get used to the tram-lining surprisingly quickly, though that doesn't make it ok. I found it was more pronounced on twistier non-highway roads where even a small unexpected change of direction due to the characteristic could be, well, a little unnerving. Non run flats cannot cure it completely, as it is also something to do with the suspension set up IIRC, but mine is a lot better now I have changed the tyres. Oh, and go for the 3.0, post-06 auto - it's a great gear box, and I have a lot of fun with mine

Hello all, I am now a zed owner! 8) I purchased a 2005 2.5l. I really like the look and feel of it. Still learning what all the options are on it. The last of the vin is LR70464 .
I got an inspection done for a general feel of mechanical condition. The shop commented how well it was maintained. :D What would be the best forum topic for me to post the results of this inspection and get feedback?
