ok, so ive owned my 'z for around 3 months so far and always intended on giving it a really thorough mop over but have untill now, barely even showing it a good jet wash!

startd the job on saturday morning around 10 am and finished on sat at about 3. followed by a 8:10 start on sunday, finishing at 14:20 !! far too long. but hey its was my first time personally moping a car over rather than watching my dad do it.

im pleased with the results, however dissapointed with how many stone chips are all over the car, especially the front bottom half of the bumper, it looks horrid so a re spray wil be needed. Im by far not the best at detailing, it took me far longer to do it than someone who has a bit of experience, and i cocked up some bits :( hope you enjoy the large pictures taken with my phone, i have to confess i wish you could see it in person, the pictures do it no justice at all! to feel the paint compared the my dads freshly polished mazzer is crazy which you can still feel tiny little nicks and micro blisters, touching the mopped 'z is like glass 8)

1) wash with soap
2) wipe it down
3) mop the car all over using makita sander/polisher and farecla g3 to cut the top layer of grime a scratches off
4) "speciality spp1001" dry polish to remove any swirl marks and generally give it a fine cut, machine polished.
5) pre-wax cleaner to remove any grease or anything (hand).
6) carnauba detailing spray on the black bits
7) auto glym super resin polish the whole car (hand)
8) metal polish and interior clean
9) front wheels off for a deep clean as well as change of light bulbs (keep getting light sensor warning and side light intermittently working)

used a knitting needle to help get into all the shut lines and grooves to remove all the gunk left over :)

the only thing i havent done is use a real "wax" which i do have in the drawer, however figured i'd put so much product on the blasted thing, i'd save the waxing for another wash :) the only thing that really lets down the look now are the wheel calipers. i have the paint and the new wheels, i just need to wait for a favourable weekend to remove them from the carriers, rub them down and then paint.

going to go for black calipers with black hubs.. any objections? my dad wants silver hubs.

What a great job you've made

Loving the flared Ferrari too, is it a 512? I sent my friend a link the other week to a flared 512 that was for sale :driving:

Nice job- bet you're pleased with that

If you're not sure whether the result was a fluke, you can come round and have a go at mine :P

Great result, and nice shots of the other cars 8)

Liking the outfit.

Was hoping to do my winter prep on my 1er this weekend but took it in for a Service on Friday and they still have it :headbang: Only consolation is they are replacing the seat cover under good will which is why I haven't got it back.

Nice work Tiff, looks great. What kind of polishing machine is that? An old one or new-ish? It looks like a forced rotation but can't really tell from the pics. How successfful have you been in removing the swirls? I ask because I spent far longer than you doing mine with a DA polisher and the swirls are still there, justthinking about either switching machine (probably try new MF pads first, mind, should be significantly cheaper!).

I'm using the Megs MF system with my DA. Best results so far but still hard work. Getting there though.

Lovely job - takes me just as long to properly clean & polish / wax a car including cleaning the interior... Though not machine polishing. So I wouldn't worry - it is a long, tiring job, but well worth it

As for calipers and hubs, personally silver for the hubs every time... And I'm a fan of silver calipers as I just think they look much cleaner.

thank you very much for the kind remarks  i didnt go very heavy on the g3 as perhaps i should have gone, it was my first time, the makita is a rotational machine but we have two others, both orbital i think, started on the orbital with the fine spp1001 polish but it takes so long to work so we switched back to the makita as it was very good, had it on low speeed the whole time :)

so its a 512bbi one of the last being a 1982 (ish) with the 5l flat 12, to cut a long story short it was owned by cris rea, who had a leman conversion done to it (flared arches along with suspension, engine bluprinting and lots of other hardcore racing mods) done by nigel mansel's ferrari garrage, its great to :driving: i might be able to get a video if his highness allows me :) :fuelfire:

Unless I'm mistaken, that's Leeds Castle - if so, you should get on a Kent or Sussex meet sometime

Met a lorry stuck in a narrow lane near there, in the days before sat Nav. The guy was from Italy. He showed my his paper work, as he was lost and he was soposed to be in Yorkshire.

Nice job on the Zed Tiff.

Haha yes I did, keep meaning to attempt a plan for another, my dad and his the mates go out for meets most weeknds so there are plenty of route to choose from ;)

The pic was taken for a charity event for pistonheads a few months ago, in the end we couldn't make it but the promo photoshoot was a blast :)

DumfriesDik, thanks for that, the more the paint helps the lines flow the better the car looks overall, does everyone else have lots of stone ships in their cars, I'm finding a lot that are auite high up, quite a few little chips out of the windscreen and then up onto both a pillars and the tops to the wings.... Under close inspection it seems my car has been victim to a "dukes of Hazzard" farmyard doughnut! Also is the general consensus that I go for black calipers and silver hubs? Over Xmas I'm looking to get the 108's split and re-furbed in a granite/silver combo

I think silver calipers and silver hubs - looks far cleaner.

Did my Zed and it looked like new metal throughout.

:driving:

Hi,

Great work with the rotary. Brave to use it, and it's paid off. Lovely coloured zed too. I only mustered the courage for a dual action polisher, but the finish is definitely better than when I bought the car.

The front of my coupe is peppered too! Yes even the odd one on the A pillars. The original windscreen has no major chips, but plenty of little chips of road rash. I figure it was motorway miles, so maybe the clutch, suspension and gearbox will be in better condition!

A front bumper respray will be on the cards after either a 108 refurb or new alloys. I like the sound of your plans. I'd go silver personally.
