First or second inspection, not sure

When I turn the ignition to On, I see the Inspection miles count. I have 20K miles on my 06 Z4M and the inspection count now reads -200 (I watched it go down from 4K to this over the last 3 months). There is no other light coming on in the dash display. The BMW dealership website says the warrenty service can only be performed when a "light" comes on the dash.

If my readout is -200, why am I not seeing a light?

This should be first inspection. The 'light' should be service engine light, this is only if there is something wrong with the car, and may require warranty work.

The inspection miles counter is for recommended maintenance. That may or may not be covered by the free maintenance package for new cars.

Yes. Exactly. It went from a positive number to now a negative 250.

And I can't get a straight answer from the dealer if the "inspection" is covered under the warrenty maintenance. They just tell me to bring it in. Bullcrap. Why can't they just answer the damn question?

Also... why is it that I own a 60K car and the dealer won't give me a loaner car for the service work? They'll shuttle me to work, but they didn't say anything about picking me up. And I'll still have to wait on THEIR time to get the ride either way. Why does any shlep purchasing a crappy $25K Mercedes 250 CLK get a loaner car?

Well AFAIK it is covered, and you shouldn't go too far beyond the "service due" though.

Not sure about MB, I thought in the US you had to pay for servicing and it wasn't included like BMW. We get loaner cars in the UK, but you usually have to wait 3 weeks to arrange the service, and then pay £250-300 for the service.

If its anything like here in Edinburgh they will shuttle you to work in a bus!
Sounds like you need a service, you should get it booked in pretty quickly as Im not sure how far into the negative before they can void your warranty?? Should cost about 200 - 300, as Wondermike said

On a Z4 there is no light that comes on. It has a mileage countdown timer as you describe. The counter starts at about 15000 miles and reduces as the mileage goes up. On a Z4M you get about 11-12000 between services and upto 15000 for the 2.5. On the M engine there is a check at 1200mls but this doesn't infuence the service interval. The cycle goes..

oil inspection - c12000mls
inspection I - c24000mls
oil inspection - c36000mls
inspection II - c48000mls
oil inspection - c60000mls
inspection I - c72000mls

and so on

if your reading 20000mls then it looks like an inspection I on a car averaging 10000mls between services so I'm guessing either a lot of cold stop-start driving or some track work or a extremely gently driven car heading for its oil inspection. I assume its the former... yes?!

Yes, it's a paid by BMW service I in the US. Mine came due at about 15,000 miles and also started going slightly into the negative before I got it in.
