Ok so took the Z for her first MOT since owning - fail!
(2003 3.0i)
Two new rear tyres needed (suggestions? Cost is an issue but so is safety/driving experience)
Brake pipe corroded
Xenon Headlight can't level-teeth are stripped/corroded, cant go up/down. Mechanic going to try and fix it

NOWTHEN! I hate the ginger bits on the headlight, and would love some de gingered but cant afford to spend hundreds on them!! What would you do?

Vreds are the tyre of choice for a lot of guys on here. Do a search...

May not be a case of can/cant afford if you NEED to replace... Tricky one!

i have vredestein ultrac sessanta's on the rears and they're fantastic.

corroded brae pipe shouldn't be too hard of a job to fix.

Also on Vreds & would buy them again no question . have had Falken's on a previous car which are cheaper but far from a budget tyre .

How do they know the brake pipes are corroded? You can Barely see them under all the cowling etc. I would be inclined to get underneath and have a look. They will probably clean off easily. brake pipes can be abit of a nonsense job because parts are so cheap. I had this problem when a garage tried to do them for me 2 years on the trott. They didn't and haven't had my custom since.

Never had Vreds on Z4 (still on the run flats) but had them on my old A4. Super tyres and I will be putting these on next.

I just got a full set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 for a few quid more than a pair of Bridgestone RE050A rear runflats. Very happy with them. Lovetyres.com have 255/35R18s for under £150 each.

The car is with the garage...I can't check the pipes. Never been to the garage before, chose the garage on a good reference from my brother...not sure if they're true to their word with the pipes but can't imagine it will cost much to do? It's the headlight im concerned about...if he cant fix it I may as well try and find clear xenons!(evern though they're like the holy grail to find it seems!) The guy owns a Z3 tho so he should know what he's doing (I hope :S)

Got the Vredstein Ultra Sessantas on mine. Superb in ALL weather conditions, including standing water and snow!

235/35 ZR19 Y on the front and 265/30 ZR19 Y on the rear.

Mine are getting to the point where they need replacing and I'm looking at Pirelli P Zero Nero's.
Anybody had any experience of these in anything other than blistering sunshine and clear dry roads?

The new vredestein ultrac vorti is the replacement to the sessanta, meant to be superior in all aspects

On my wish list when I need to replace.

Find out what part of the pipes they are referring to, the actual pipe runs or the ferrule on the flexi hoses that run to the calliper? In both cases ANY surface corrosion is an automatic advisory even if it could have been removed with a soft brush and coat of something to protect it. Only corrosion affecting the integrity of the pipe or ferrule is a fail.

My MOT guy has twice given an advisory for a flexi ferrule but categorically says there is no way they will fail and declined to replace them. Lesson being to give accessible brake pipes and ferrules a rub and some protection before the MOT as most cars over 5 yrs old are likely to have surface corrosion on them.

If it's the flexies they are quite easy to replace and about £20 each from Eurocarparts, a full brake pipe change is a bit of a bitch and pricey as they are well hidden in places, I recall someone recently having only some of the visible sections changed which was a much cheaper solution (if a tester can't see it they can't fail it, that's the rules).

Having said all the above brakes are QUITE important so err on the side of caution and spend on them before this de-gingering nonsense

Good luck.

bought 2 vreds at 140 each. Do you think I should ring and ask about the brake pipe? Or leave them fix it as it is an important part if corroded! Thanks for the tyre advice..still unsure about the headlight!

Brake pipes probably just need a clean, I've heard of a few failures for brake pipes, when really they were just dirty

I wouldn't give any garage an open cheque to do a repair without knowing exactly what they say is required and at least an estimate, if not a quote for the cost. A full brake line refit could be an expensive job. I'm not suggesting you challenge what they are saying, just get the facts first and check options.
