First clean of my 3.0si

Looks very classic like at the moment - perhaps consider matt black or black with chrome trim front grilles.

Enjoy it this weekend and over the future :driving: - Detailing - :driving: Detailing - :driving:

The tyre paint was bought for use with my motorcycles (and I note your (modern?) Bonneville at the bottom of your post Dan 425). It is a pump action type of pen bought on the net - ebay.

I'm with your ZermattV - I think a black set of front grills will help. The 'classic' look is taking some getting used to. . .

After a thorough washing and polishing yesterday, Steph and I went out on some of our favourite roads and now the car is filthy - really filthy! The darker grey shows up road muck much clearer than the lighter grey! Jason Plato maintains a dirty car is sexier than a clean one any day of the week and at the moment - I think he has a point - the Stratus Grey does look good all covered in road grime.

Even with the lousy road conditions it was great to find that the 3.0 can be driven with as much fun and commitment as the 2.0 - distances shorten of course between the bends but I am delighted in the choice to be had to either rev out in the lower gears or surf the torque and stay in one gear - it's made 4th and 5th (and 6th on the motorway) very useable gears. Terrific engine and what a safe overtaking tool it is too - dispatching cars impressively and reminding me of my motorcycle days - (nearly!) At our coffee stop 20mpg raised eyebrows but I guess with the performance and driving style it Is to be expected (the 2.0 used to manage 27-29 on the back lanes) Managed 35 on the run back from Wetherby to Newcastle when collected - I'm sure I can improve on these figures when I get to know the engine better.

Found out the car has Bluetooth and cup holders and aux in! All bonuses - I had no idea - and - used the park assist today - so very happy so far.

:driving:

Sounds like you had a nice drive getting to know the 3 litres :driving:

Matt black grills would look great on your zed and really transform the look of the front, I liked how the matt black grills changed the look of the front on my zed and I certainly wouldn't change them back now

Hi dan425 - went to the garage to check the pens used on tyres

The tyre pens I use are:

Polco Tyre Paint Lettering Pen 10ml - lasted years and did many motorcycle tyres. Bought from a bike shop on the West Road in Newcastle

Tyreart - 'Paint in a Pen' 10ml bought from ebay

both contains Xylene

Bridgestone tyres offer the best lettering for ease of application - good size lettering and bordered letters. Falken brand lettering is a little tight and small and Good Year Eagle F1s have lots of lettering but no edging to hold the paint so you need to be very precise (best thing to remove over run of paint is a strong finger or thumb nail to drag and scratch off - nothing else seems to work as well!)

My work needs to be gone over again but I'll wait until the weather settles. Here's a photo of my previous Zed's tyre art.

:driving:

Cheers, mate, I might try it out on my Bonnie or Zed.

If I didn't like the effect, how would I go about removing it? I have Goodyear Eagle F1s, so will need to take my time if they're tricky.

In answer to your previous question, it's a 2002 T100 Bonneville Special, made by Triumph and modified by Mecatwin, a French tuning company just south of Paris. She has served me well on two trips around France, Belgium and Germany, as well as plenty of wet and dry miles in the UK! I'm also looking at getting a Daytona 675 soon too. What about you?

Hi Mr Wilks - Where were you when I needed you - can't justify too many cosmetics on my new Zed - just investment for running for now but damn - I love those wheels!

Hi Swiftly,
Just the muck and damp on the roads spoiling the fun but made it interesting enough to realise I'd made the right choice - thank you for the help in getting there!

Hi dan425,
I've never had to remove the tyre paint but as it gets easily worn off I would think a light application of some sandpaper would do it?

We've (my wife has a full licence too)had a selection of motorcycles a succession of three Suzuki GS1000s - remember them from the mid 70s? Jota bars rear sets custom seat. The bike I always wanted as a youth on his 250 Honda! Then moved onto a Triumph Daytona 1200 which we kept for many years until a Dutch driver pulled out on us looking the other way at a dual carriageway in Scotland - write off - fabulous bike (we were mostly two up so liked the cubes) then getting older (more lazy!) replaced with a Honda VFR 800i - surprisingly couldn't grow to love that v4 engine and craved the straight four so back to Suzuki - new Bandit 650 water cooled - very easy ride but lacked soul. During this period had a few classics - Velocette LE (Noddy bike - totally rebuilt and like new - £1100 for a watercooled shaft driven horizontally opposed tiny twin with monocoque frame - the engineering was amazing but the bike killed off Velocette) Great for taking to shows. Exchanged that for a 650 Bonneville twin with the single carb head (Tiger format) in café racer style - nightmare to ride with the clip ons so converted it to high bars and normal pegs - modern electrics fitted new rubber etc - charming but not suitable for any long trips. Bought and sold BSA M20 and Sunbeam. Always like to have something in the garage. At present the Zed is our toy but...my son bought a 1970s bright orange Puch maxi some years ago and used it to commute in Manchester for a couple of years - I've bought it off him and use that to show at Classic meets - even fits in the back of the car with the seats down so I've sold my bike trailer too!

I think tyre lettering looks great on motorcycles - not sure about my new Zed though - it looked great on my old silver Zed - this darker grey looks more subdued and might not suit. Will freshen up the lettering for the spring and make a decision then.

Stay between the ditches! :driving:

Paul,

Great colour and look: we'll played.

Regarding the spec and stumbling across extras as you go, if you ask your friendly BMW garage they will give you a screen print of the actual build sheet. Knights Stafford did for me: proves very useful, you might find more

Meant to say used metal cleaner on tail pipes (brasso) and they came up a treat from being very black. Do like Monkey pipes mind you - is there a link to these peeps?

She looks lovely Paul

I'm really glad you're enjoying the move to 3 litre.
