First 4 months of ownership

Well here's my tale of the first 4 months with a zed. Spent more than I mean't to, as you do, to get a cracking car. First day with the car all is well up to lovely hotel with the better half for an overnight car running well, wife impressed. Next day all set for a day exploring the roads of central Scotland on the way home then what's that on the dash, a warning light, straight after start up in the morning. So it's straight home not amused off to a bad start.
Into my trusted mechanic and CCV diagnosed as faulty, ok that's bad luck especially as I bought private, anyway ££ later it's back running noticeably better than before. Then after 70 miles, my happiness is ruined, the EML light is back again with the fault codes P0171 and P0174 which as most will know is running lean on banks 1 and 2. Back to the garage and after a bit of head scratching and investigations, smoke test done and a small leak in one of the new CCV valve pipes found sorted and all is well for another 70 miles then what's that oh yes the EML light is back on.
Well it's the same fault codes again, so it's not too much air as smoke test rules this out, mechanic says BMW injectors are pretty good especially on a low mileage, 43500, car, as it affects both banks it's unlikely to be O2 sensors. Not wanting to throw money parts chasing I got the car Terracleaned and a new genuine BMW air filter put in. Car is now running better, a bit smoother and feels sharper on acceleration, one happy guy.
Well 70 miles later it's back on, the EML, cancelled the same fault codes and can't believe it. Anyway 70 miles later it's back on again, getting seriously pissed off with the car it's running fine well pleased with everything but this recurring fault.
After a night trawling various BMW forums including this one I decided to get a new MAF, have cleaned the old one 4-5 times with no difference, got it 2 days ago and have done over 200 miles and all is now at last well. One happy, at last, Z 4 owner. :D :driving:

Let's hope that your problems are behind you and that you now get a lot of fun and enjoyment from your Zed. :)

had the same problem when i first brought my car, it turned out to be a split in the short flex pipe of the large pipe from the air filter to the engine,

Yes also had same problem with hose and once replaced have not had a problem

I wish it had been as simple as a split hose to fix, anyhow its fixed now. Just need to get the roof cleaned and proofed for the winter now. Oh and I forget to mention the GM5 module threw a wobbly too and wouldn't unlock the passenger door, had to get new relays fitted, many thanks to Colin at C A Auto electronics for great service.

Glad you've got it sorted at last - modern cars are so complex - especially BMW's - had mine for nearly 3 years - still under 30k - no real problems other than a water temperature sensor O ring leak ( easy DIY fix for £2.80 ) and the infamous DSC/Brake sensor warning light ( new No 2 sensor replaced £140 ) TBF I've only done 500 miles in all in my ownership ! What is annoying though is our DD 2004 Fiesta ( we've had since new ) has covered 64k miles without fault - only real expense was new pads/discs !
