First 10k in 12 years!!!

So today saw a huge milestone (no pun intended) in my weightloss journey.

In the past I have run several marathons, but lack of motivation resulted in gaining weight, making running too hard, so I stopped. That last marathon was 2007.

In the years that followed, the exercise remained zero but the eating continued....

all the way to 20 stone! (I think at one point it was over 21).

So, last June I had a new found motivation to sort it out and started the Cambridge diet. This helped me get down to 14 stone by May.

In January I started a "beginners/returners running course" and got to 5k by March.

Since then I have been running 3 times a week with a friend and we built our stamina up to run 10k in just over an hour.

I let her talk me into doing the Woolacombe 10k and we focused on that. The heat we've had recently caused us problems, but today was race day.

To say I was bricking it would be an understatement! It's an offroad course (which I hate) and part of the North Devon AONB marathon (one of the hardest in the country).

We did it in 1hr 18 which I was pleased with considering the hills and the heat.

At one point I went arse-over tit into brambles and stinging nettles as I got too fast momentum on a downhill section! Got cuts on my legs from the brambles but its the stinging nettles I am feeling at the moment!

Neither off us are "born" runners, and are not whippets, but considering where I've come from (i.e. let myself get so overweight) this is a real achievement for me....the first proper race (not that I was racing) for 12 years!

Sorry to bore you all with my self-praise but wanted to share it.

Awesome journey back to a healthy lifestyle. Keep it going

Fancy joining me for the Dartmoor Marathon, in a few weeks

Well done fella

I can also wholeheartedly recommend cycling as a potentially less intense/painful form of burning calories! Just a thought

Thanks. Yes, keeping the weight off is really where the hard work begins, I just love food! Got to hand it to those who keep on top of it and never get that out of shape. Once I was in the right mindset (I suffer with depression, so thats another mountain to climb) the diet was easy! It was very black and white and I genuinely stuck to it rigidly...even to the point of going to Burger King with Deb and watching her eat a Chicken Royale with cheese (highly recommended) and I just had coke zero!

Dartmoor marathon....not up to that distance yet (just looked at website...definitely not my terrain! Good luck). My target was to run 10k three times a week and get it down to 1 hour. Our training runs (on the flat with just one hill) have taken 1hr 6 so not doing too bad. When i'm comfortable doing it 3 times a week, i'll probably use one of them as a longer run and increase the distance.

I used to cycle to work every day (we are talking 15 years ago when it was only a couple of miles to work) but I haven't really cycled for years. My brother in law is a very keen cyclist, set up his own club and has organised some big charity events (I've driven the support vehicle...much easier). I don't think running at my pace is a big calorie burner, so still have to watch the food, but it gives me a great feeling at classing myself as a runner.

Impressive stuff there!

Good luck with your future plans too.

...just talked myself into another one this weekend!

...and then a 10 miler in November (gives me something to aim for).

Still early days, but if I keep it up then my fitness and health will benefit loads.

Love this. Well done for getting back on it. From my experience this is easy compared the challenges of depression but as I’m sure you know, running/exercise is a massive help with that.

Keep it up, I don’t know you, but I feel you. 💪

Did the 2nd one today and it was a killer - pretty much uphill most of the time, even the nice downhill sections had brutal uphills after them!

Time wise was slower...actually was 11k not 10. We did 10 in 1:20 and 1:31 for the 11k.

This time it was my running partner who fell over. Didn't lift her legs up and tripped on a rock. Fell over and hurt her hip and shafted the screen on her phone. She beat me though!

Sore legs and back for the rest of the day!

The next one we are doing will be a flat course! Think these two count as my hill training for the year :D

Congratulation on a determined effort

You deserve that new iwatch

Don’t let that 77 / 83 worry you - there were many more than that sitting on their backsides

Thanks.

Being at the back doesn’t worry me, have often been last when I used to run 12 years ago.

I did a 10 miler once and the St Johns Ambulance was following me all the way!
