finding car specs

I am new to BMW having just purchase my first one 2003 Z4
Is there anywhere I can put in vin # & find out what actual specs & equipment are in the car I bought? I got 5 or 6 booklets with the car but no list of actual equipment.

Right now mostly interested in security system & remote access control units. Afraid if I just go into BMW dealership not knowing what the setup is in the car they'll try to sell me things I may already have.

I know some basic information

2.5 L L6 FI DOHC 24 V 5 SPEED AUTOMATIC

HAS POWER LEATHER SEATS
HAS POWER SOFTTOP CONTROL
17 " WHEELS
I WAS SO TOTATLY OVERWHELMED WITH THE STYLE, RIDE , OVERALL APPEARANCE & HANDLING
THAT I PURCHASED CAR FIRST SIGHT.

THANK YOU FOR ANY MUCH NEEDED GUIDANCE. I'M 72 YRS OLD SO NOT LIKELY TO GET CARRIED AWAY WITH ANY SPEEDING PROBLEMS.

gepher, welcome to the forum... :driving:

If you go the BMW owner's web site and register I "Think" you can see what was included in the build of your car...

https://www.bmwusa.com/secured/content/forms/login.aspx

Edit: I did some checking and the owner's web site will not give you the build details. You can get manuals and other information that might be useful.

i tired to find a similar one for the UK after trying to register on this one and it doesnt work. anyone know of one?

WELCOME gepher!!

On this side of the pond auto insurance companies can enter your vin and obtain a pretty complete list of factory options that were included on any US spec auto.

WELCOME gepher!!

Your local BMW dealer should be able to tell you, when I part exd my last two 3 series both to dealers that didnt supply they used the computer to otain the spec. First car was a 2002 so shouldnt be an issue.

You could always pretend to be interested in a new Z4, they will have to look then to give you a price on yours.

This is a working VIN decoder: http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi
It gives you vehicle information, but doesn't list the accessories...

does this show if it is an I, SI or SE?

SI relates to the engine spec, where as SE relates to equipment spec, before facelift there was only SE until they dropped the name (or was it the otherway round) , post facelift SE or Sport. You dont need any databse to determine the above.

how dont you need a database?

the problem/mystery im trying to solve is that some of the docs have SE on them and one of them has I. from memory i thought it was SE and SI.

how do i tell the difference betweeen the two? if there is any?

Sorry, will try and make it clearer.

SI = Facelift model only and refers ro 2.5si and 3.0si it is not related to equipment just the engine. only other engine available after facelift being the 2.5i (and of course ///M)

SE/i = Pre facelift Z4 first launched as SE and nothing else, later on still pre facelift the dropped the SE and it was called just i as in 2.2i and 3.0i instead of 2.2SE and 3.0SE

SE/Sport = Facelift model which relates to equipment specification and nothing to do with engine.

You would need the databse to determine Nav, Bluetooth etc though.

Cheers for your help guys, my 4RSE was palpitating for a minute there over the thought of a messy dispute about the advertisement of the car!!

I thought I would email the BMW service line, and they have informed me that my car is indeed a

Z4 2.5i SE Roadster

They also said that is all they can disclose by email. And to ring them costs £1 a minute so watch out if you’re ringing!
