Finally got round to it,,

So finally, with all this time on my hands, got around to the last thing in my stereo upgrade, a subwoofer box to go behind the ski hatch

No it doesn’t , but I am going to fix it on the rear of the ski hatch and fire it through there, the overall box is only 163mm so not to bad, plus the hatch is recessed by 25mm

Splendid I’m using an Alpine class d amp should be doing 500w rms into two Audison factory fit subwoofers

I don’t get a lot of woofer response but not sure if I’m not quite right on the DSP setup or it’s just crap using the factory enclosure

Be interesting to hear your thoughts when it’s plumbed in Rusty. Are you going to line the box with wadding? Have you built it with the correct litre size or is it not necessary?

I notice your amp can deliver more rms power than the speaker is rated at...just wondered how you ensure you don’t overdrive it?

On the construction details for the box it says only line the bottom of the box , so I shall try that, yes I calculated the box on the sizes/ltrs stated, but it does say you can go smaller

Yes the amp at 2ohms is rated at 540 and the speaker at 500, I have no issue with that as I am not going to be running anywhere near flat out, plus in theory I always believed it’s better to have the power that way round to drive the speaker harder

I always thought it is more difficult to damage a speaker with an amplifier that is too powerful than one that is too small. Simple reason being that what damages speakers is the clipped or squared distorted output. This is because the speaker is being forced to work much harder, as the driver tries to stop and start very quickly, attempting to reproduce the square wave. There is also a much greater chance of the amp overheating and dying as well.

A more powerful amp will eventually cause the speaker to overheat, so pairing a 1000W PA amp with a pair of domestic speakers is not a great idea, but the actual difference between a 500w and 540w amp is pretty much negligible in terms of power delivery.
