Few Issue's

I think my roof has called time on its career. I've just come to put it down in the garage and the light at the side of the button is coming on orange. I've made sure the luggage compartment bit is down flat so that can be ruled out. Its looking like its dead isn't it? :(

Glove box handle dropped off. Not too concerned about this.

Finally, got a wierd noise from front of engine. Its really hard to explain but it sounds like a bearing on a pulley has gone dry. Maybe tensioner, i'm not sure. It only does it when the engine has warmed up. Any idea's anyone?

The warranty is autoprotect total care premier plus, i'm hoping its going to save me on two of those issues.

cheers

What year/engine do you have? I know the 2.5l sometimes had trouble with a tensioner (my 2003 325Ci, rattled a bit).

I'm not really sure on how to interpret plates, but if the car is post facelift (2006 and on with the N52 engine) it *could* be in the clutch. I have a 2007 3.0Si that rattles a bit if I'm stopped at a light, in neutral, clutch engaged. Several more have said the same and had the clutch replaced. I have no other problems with the drivetrain on this car so I'll just mention it at her next routine service and see what my service adviser says.

There are several threads on the subject, search on transmission or clutch rattle-should get you some hits.

It's a pre-facelift late 2003/early 2004

You got warranty? Might be costly. Maybe it's just a microswitch that's broken, I'd probably have a further investigation around the shelf area.

Fan belt or water pump maybe.

If it's before the new engines, then I'd definitely go with Wondermike's suggestion. I think in the 2.5s it was something to do with the A/C compressor, so you might check that as well.

Thanks for the help :)

I'll check everything before it goes back to the dealer.

I've never worked on one of these before so its all new unfortunately.

I have warranty but it's not a main dealer one. However, it does cover the roof and water pump/ac stuff thankfully.

Common engine noise is the water pump, right at the front of the engine, quite an easy DIY. As for the roof, was the roof slow or noisey before? If not i doubt it's a big problem.Have you manually moved the roof up and down then tried it again?

Hi Al,

I'm thinking its the water pump or something around that area.

I've fixed the roof myself this afternoon. Had a play with that switch that sits near the shelf. At first the motor was struggling to move the roof, it would only move an inch. Had another fiddle with it. Then the motor was spinning but not pulling the roof back. i heated the area up slightly around where the motor is then went for a drive. I stupidly pressed the button while at trafic lights in Wakefield City Centre and the roof folded down lol. Everyone was staring

Looks like a combination of a poor connection and maybe damp wiring. Maybe shopping bags have knocked the shelf and bent the metal strip on the switch. Its ok now anyway. I'll also have to check the roof drains and clear if necessary.

I forgot to add, big thanks again to this forum. Without it i'd have been shafted.

Cheers

Well that's good news, not nice to have on your mind over the Christmas period eh? It will be a good idea to check the drain trays either side.
I also suspect that it is never a good idea to use the roof down after alot of rain.My theory is that water can sit around the base of the hood under the dust strip (around the body) as the strip isn't water tight. As the roof motor is in the LHS panel, it also sits near where water can drain into the drip tray. If you lower the roof just after heavy rain you can cause a lot of excess water to flood the motor causing corrosion or motor damage when driving/cornering. I personally wait until the roof is dry before lowering but this is just my opion why some Z4s roofs fail potentially after heavy rain.

ok bit of an update with this,

I found out last saturday that the car is still under warranty with BMW so i booked it into the main dealers to get things sorted out. I've now got a new switch for the roof and had the glovebox fixed :)

However the engine noise is going to need further investigation. The dealers think it could be a problem with the oil pump :o

They rang on friday asking if they could keep the car because they want to remove the sump to inspect the pump. Has anyone ever heard of oil pumps being noisy on Z4's or even failing?

Its not something i'd come across before.

I'm getting a bit worried, but BMW have insisted i'll have the car back mid to late next week. I just wouldn't have thought an oil pump would pack in after only 40,000 miles.

Oh well.

my 04 2.2 had a similar sound that went after i had all the coils replaced!

I need them to check that too but at a later date. The car can sometimes be slightly hesitant at low revs.
