Few issues with my 2008 Coupe - please put my mind at rest!

Hi,

I have recently purchased a lovely 2008 3.0s Coupe but have a few concerns as follows:-

1) When i put my foot down I get a brief whiney/humming noise. I still have warranty on the car so took to the garage and they tell me it normal. I find this very strange and want to hear from people if this is true or are they having me at it? * I should add that the car is automatic transmission.

2) The rear speakers are terrible even when i put the balance at the front, there is a real distortion of the mid range - sounds almost like a broken cone although the garage say there is nithing wrong with them. If I play dance music through them it sounds appalling and is a real disapointment. Again - is this normal?

3) There is a noticeable drag to the right when on a highway. Not drastic but seriously more than my last car which was a 2003 330Ci. Again, the garage tell em it is normal and to do with the electric steering system or aomething and there will always be some deviation from straight. I find this very strange again.

Can people please give me their thoughts? I want to get some back up from other owners before I go back and complain.

Thanks guys

For the drag, ensure it has had its alignment done, but also consider ditching the standard runflat tyres as most people on here have done.

If the pulling is consistently to the right then its not tramlining and is more likely to be an alignment or other suspension fault. Check obvious stuff like tyre pressures and condition of alloys, i.e. no obvious knocks, cracks or damage....

How can badly distorted speakers be 'normal'?

Can't comment on the whining noise, but am assuming this is not a BMW dealership by the sound of it? If it is, they want shooting.....

Car is from BMW AGMC, Dubai and has done 30k KM's

Alignment has been done once apparently. They tell me that some movement is normal but i'm not convinced.

In terms of the speakers I was just wondering if the standard speakers ar generally OK or if it is normal or them to be poor. My 330Ci had great speakers and even my Vectra TDi had better sounds than this!

The whining is a short sharp sound when going up through the gears. The guy recons it is normal but cant believe that it is.

Dance music and standard car stereo systems don't usually mix that well,if you are listening to pumping bass and at high volumes, them I suggest you are simply overwhelming the speakers and asking a bit too much of a standard set up. Maybe some aftermarket kit would solve your problem. Don't forget , you now have a sports car and internal space is at a premium,so there is much less room to fit big speakers and less room for the speakers to do their job,so sound is bound to be compromised. Also get the dealer to re do the alignment ( all 4 wheels) and give you the print out, then dump the runflats.Don't know about the auto noise, mine's a manual. Most of all, your coupe should be a pleasure to own not give you grief, I hope you get happy with it soon.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm not expecting to be able to pump the tunes out too loud just want clarity at low levels. I find that even with the radio at low volumes the speakers seem to distort - do you get anything like that?

Welcome-and aren't these cars fun? :)

As to whiney noise-not sure, I have the manual transmission. When you say "put your foot down" I assume you're speaking of on the "go" pedal not the brakes. Do you hear this only in certain places (like a parking garage???).

Speakers-did you get the Carver sound system (2 speakers behind each seat) or standard? Might be a blown cone or maybe you just need to set up the balance?

Drifting to one side-no, this is NOT a characteristic and I still run run-flat tires (I don't seem to have the trouble with them many on here do). If it's always to one side, though, you might want to have them do another alignment. Some movement IS normal. These are tightly sprung sports cars with wide, low-profile tires. They move around a bit.

Hi there,

I also have a Z4 Coupe 3.0si and i had the same problem with the whinning noise/high pitched whistle. I had BMW (Bahrain) look into the matter to the point the sound was recorded and sent to BMW in Germany to investigate. The solution as i was told was to replace the transmission oil TWICE. That's correct twice. All i can say is the noise is gone.

I hope this helps you.
