my 03' 2.5i just seems a little sluggish ,it's an auto ,but still , anyways i am planning on doing the vanos repair since it's gonna need it anyways. i have 40k on it right now,and i think it's time for the repair,i checked out Beisan Systems for the vanos repair kit. i know there's a few of you here who have already done this fix,and i just want to know if the kit they sell has everything i need ,or do i need to buy anything extra,(something that might get broken during the repair etc..) i plan on taking it to an independent shop , i live in Houston, and if anybody can recommend a good shop let me know,i'll also pay someone to do it that has done it already ,if you live close by.i could probably do it myself, but i just don't have the time, and also,i'm more used to working on older engines. all advice is welcome.

Hi Z4inhtown,

I've a same model & yr made as yours, but done only 22K km. I'm too feel that it's getting bit sluggish at the low RPM. But I'm not sure if it is due to the vanos seal ....given the low mileage. I read somewhere that it's a pain-in-the-xxx to change the vanos seal on a Z4 due to the small amount of clearance space to work with. I also read horror stories of DIY-ers breaking this & that in the process. Anyway, hope you would share your experience on the outcome & results of the vanos seal change. Good luck.

Do a search on the forum for Vanos. Most of your questions will be answered with these threads.

It is not hard, but it is time consuming....

The kit from Beisan Systems is just the O-rings. It is up to you to determine what else you need. On the Beisan site is a great DIY page on how to do this repair. It is what I used.

If after reading all this, and have any more questions, let me know and I will do what I can to help out...

Sorry for being so terse, it's 0600 and I have to go to work.... Later

thanks, i will do a more in depth look into what i may need for the vanos repair, i plan on ordering the kit from Beisan, and see what else i may need , and since i won't be doing it myself,i wanted to find out from personal past experiences from those who have done the work themselves ,if i need to buy any extra parts in case the technician breaks something during the repair. it just seems like i'm not getting very good fuel economy .as well as slow acceleration, and i think this will help a great deal.

Your fuel economy should not be affected by the repair. If you look at the Vanos forum, you will see that most do not have an increase.

Vanos problems on the Z4, usually manifest themselves as reduced power in the 2K RPM to 4K RPM range. On other models they manifest themselves as low RPM hunting and engine quitting when cold plus power loss.

The parts you normally need are:

1. New Vanos O-Rings.
2. New Vanos Gasket.
3. New Rocker Gaskets.
4. Tube of High Temp RTV.
5. Another Quart of Oil.
6. LOTS of CLEAN RAGS.

I forgot to ask, what year is your Z?

You could have Pre-Cat 02 sensors that are marginal and not throwing a code.

Check out this thread of mine: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4488&p=65124&hilit=+sensors#p63352

mine's a 09/03 build too heh

I didn't notice any power loss at all with mine... i guess i've gotten used to the lack of the power but I did a lot of things to gain power back. i like to say vanos didn't do as much as the seafoam....

i did seafoam first, then noticed a huge gain and when i did vanos a week later, then waited few hundred miles to properly seat the rings, didn't notice anything out of the ordinary from when I did the seafoam... weird but thats just my observation
