Feeling Down After Test Drive

debating a new Z4 3.0 or a Boxster S ... have to sway getting swayed towards Boxster even though I do really like the Z4 styling.

I found the driving position in the Porsche a bit odd; the steering wheel is right down in your lap, felt weird. Perhaps it's because I'm excessively tall, but the Z4 is way more comfortable in my opinion.

Plus of course the running cost of the Porsche was considerably more than the Zed.

Nope, I worked many years in electrical maintenance, a lot computerized control systems (PLC's, VFD's etc) with an awful lot of troubleshooting thrown in just for fun.

Thanks for that Stu . At least I know where I stand regarding engine size, although I will need to arrange another test drive. However, not much point in doing that yet as I'm still not convinced on the golf side of things but have been looking at alternate bags as mine is a bit on the lardy side. As this is to be a September purchase time is on my side.

What your missing in the 23i is torque. I have a 23i and driven a couple of XK's (nearly bought an XK). Mine is auto as I am disabled but I have driven the manual. The 23i manual is a great car and you could use the extra saved for a few extras like adaptive suspension.

However you do have to rev this car to get the most from it as peak torque is well up the rpm range. To get similar "feeling" of torque as the Jag i'm afraid the 35i turbo is the only route.

For me the perfect combo was the s30i with a manual tranny. Shift throws are short, ratios are nicely spaced and the car feels perfectly balanced.

Having had another look at the Z4 boot this afternoon I've had to conclude that it is not right for me so its back to the drawing board. I suspect that this means that I will be looking a coupes rather than convertibles or will reconsider the JCW.
