Feeling chuffed just finished Vanos refurb

Feeling a sense of achievement and satisfaction at having accomplished a successful double Vanos refurb on my E85 2.5. First major engine related issue and happy to report that all went well, noticeable improvement in low down engine performance with no 'misfire' like stuttering.

Will need more time to see if I see any improvement in fuel consumption, the main reason I undertook the task was due to the cam cover gasket leaking, which now doesn't!
Happy days

Good stuff. Its an often over looked job but does make a noticeable difference to the M54 engines. Done a few of these now and have always seen a slight improvement in fuel economy, only about 1mpg so nothing to get too excited about. The engine response is the main diiference. Its a shame the majority of M54 engines never benefit from the vanos seals being replaced, especially considering the originals are supposed to be pretty much shot by 20k.

This is why I fancy doing mine. I know people have said "if it's not broke/rattling, leave well alone" but everything I've read says they start to deteriorate gradually at relatively low miles..

Any chance of a write up? Any major access issues, have read that you need to raise the engine a little to get the units clear of the front?

Nice work.

Cheers for that :driving:

Thanks Mack

Ye on my brief test drive I did notice a "perkier" pick from lower down without any hesitation. If anything its been a good learning process from a personal point of view. Now just need to do those RTAB's and the CDV delete and change the springs and renew the wishbones and ........

have a read of this

http://www.beisansystems.com/procedures/vanos_procedure.htm

The first time I did them (many many moons ago) I did them because the car was soft coding vanos codes in the ecu. It fixed the issue and certainly made the car nicer/perkier/torquier, particularly low down. Don't get me wrong its noticeable but not like remapping a turbo! If I remember correctly the job is slightly trickier on the E85 than the E46 due to access at the front of the engine but still easily doable at home.

Yes

What he said

It is very tight for space and the most difficult part is some of the screws you can't see, so you need to go by feel alone. The most difficult bit for me strangely enough was refitting the plastic cap back onto the left hand Vanos, my bent nose pliers were to short to push it all the way in to locate properly, it wasn't a problem taking the cap out! :x

Hi Mike

I appear to have been lucky , in that I didn't have any access issues to prevent removal that so many have reported.
