Fed up with non geographic phone numbers, 0870 etc?

Prompted by a comment about paying 10p per min for booking Silverstone Classic tickets I thought I'd post this as I hate it when you get charged for giving business to a company, or getting support when their product sucks.

The site is a database of 0870 type numbers and their standard equivalents, or even better, the freephone version. I needed to call IHG hotels to book a room for my son using my reward points. 10p/min if you use the phone number, or free when I found the freephone number on this site :)

been using that for years great site. The big companies seemed to have clocked it as often the numbers on it are not quite up to date so you have to try a few till you get to where you want. once in tho just plead ignorance and ask to be transferred.
 
Aren't 0870's included in call plans along with 01's, 02's etc?, I spoke to Dension support yesterday & checked saynoto0870 first with no alternative number.

Check with your service provider though as 0870's may already be included, mine below from BT

"included in your phone package - Unlimited calls to UK landlines at any time, Inclusive calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers at any time"
 
Not totally understanding UK phone systems, correct me if I'm wrong..

I am assuming that 0870 0845 numbers are a type of "trunk" line to a business that does not accrue long distance charges when dialed from a landline... ( the business would pay a flat fee for it)
If that's correct , then it would be the same as our 1-800-xxx-xxxx numbers and it hadn't occurred to me that while it's free on my landline it also costs me air time if I use my cell to call ....
I have free long distance in Canada and the USA (not quite free, I pay $21 a month for it to be "free" ) on my landline and free long distance on my Cell but just in Canada and there's no charge for the cell other than standard airtime minutes.

Over here, 0870 lines incur a charge set by the company (as do numbers starting 0845, 0871 and 0844 -they can cost up to 16p/min - a lot more than a call to a normal 01, 02 landline or 03 number). 0800 numbers are free (like 1-800 numbers in the US)

However all of this is only true when called from a landline. From a mobile, you pay the mobile to landline charge, plus the landline charge - so an 0800 number is charged at the same rate as a call to a standard 01 number.
