What is your favourite stretch of winding road?

Mine is the Kancamagus hwy (rt 122) between Conway and Lincoln New Hampshire...breahtaking views and spirited driving (when your not following an RV!) :driving:

Yes: Blue Ridge Parkway. No cars, great vistas.
Yes: Highway 1, from San Francisco to Santa Cruz, then again from Monterey to Santa Barbara
Yes: Many roads in Marin County, California
Yes: Many roads in Santa Cruz County, California

No: Deal Gap (Tail of the Dragon) due to an excessive number of PoPo.
No: Any interstate highway (except maybe 80 through the sierras, or 70 through the Rockies)
No: Natchez Trace Parkway. Lovely. 444 miles of Country Club Driveway. Boring. Lovely. Boring. Yawn.

Ah, come on, the Dragon is fun even if you can't go so fast. Blue Ridge parkway would be right up there and the roads around Highlands-lots of small waterfalls up there so it's gorgeous.

That is on the top of my list!

List of roads I don't ever have to drive or ride on!!

I don't really have a favorite to drive but most of the feeder roads onto and off the Blue Ridge are a lot of fun!

Mississippi State Hwy. 587 from Foxworth to Montecello has been called by my biker friends, "The Mississippi-Tail of the Dragon". About 28 miles of curves and hills. Road is good and one should not have much, if any, law problems. Once in Montecello, one can enjoy a fantastic catfish dinner!!!

Of course, the famed Natchez Trace is a senic ride through history.....@ 55 MPH.

Anyhere that I can find an empty road and solitude, and my Zeppelin just a rockin.

From Oberammergau to Oberau Germany. The reverse isn't quite as scary...:)

Near the tip of the boot in Italy is kinda fun too on the way from Rome to Sicily, only did that once in a rental tho :?

My favorite road is Lake Shore Drive (LSD) in Chicago.

I thought the scenery was fine, but it took me over 4 hours the last time I was there; I have no idea if that is normal. Traffic was just awful. I had to pee and could not find a convenient place to get off so it was not a pleasure drive for me at all. If you want a pretty drive go from Seattle to Whistler BC. In the summertime. If you go to the Winter Olympics you probably will travel that way unless you fly into Vancouver first. :)

Glen Coe is a great road, although the weather is often rotten. I always enjoyed my local road when I lived in Scotland, along the side of Loch Ness, it's a great road when clear of traffic but in the summer it's full of tourists who don't know what a corner is and so are constantly braking  (you guys must be some of the few Americans that know how to go around bends in the road :P ) :tumbleweed:

'Evo' triangle in North Wales usually quiet and 26 miles of twisty winding roads. Or Ingleton to Hawes and the Buttertubs Pass in Yorkshire, blinding roads all

My favourite by far is the North Antrim Coast Road on the northern coast of Ireland. Breathtaking scenery, some excellent roads and plenty of places to stop for a break with plenty to do. People come from all over the world to drive it so it can be a bit busy, especially at weekends in summer but when it's quiet, it's excellent.

Favorite road from my distant grad school past: Rt. 84 (Woodside Rd. / La Honda Rd. near Woodside, CA) from Skyline Rd. out to the coast. I lived out there for several years (strangely enough in Patty Hearst's old place) and treated it as my personal race track.

These days it's probably just the road up to my lab in the Santa Susana hills near LA. Only a couple of miles of twisties, but I know every inch:

that's a good one...i like 84 to Hwy 9 to Santa Cruz, though Boulder Creek and all the cute little towns on the way to the beach. though with the price of gas i've not done a fun run since early summer.

Scuzi, that's a cracking bit of road. It's just a pity the NI drivers are such idiots. They seem to drive everywhere at 50MPH.

(Seriously, do you all have to re-pass me because I'm sticking to the speed limit in a built up area? Bunch of maroons! )

I like the scenic route around red rock, but it has a low speed limit and generally has quite a few hikers, bikers, joggers, and while I love accumulating points I can't really have that much fun there.

Lee Canyon rd on Mt charleston is nice, but again gotta watch out for peoples.

Vally of Fire to Lake Mead is awesome, valley of fire road is smooth and if you go at the right time, no one there. A handful of miles going to Lake Mead is real bumpy roads but then it becomes a well paved road and very easy to 80+ on the roads around curves. Just watch for cops if your there during the daytime.

All my favourites are in the French Alps. N85 route Napoleon, Col De Izoard, Col DeTurini, plus many hundreds of miles of amazing roads discovered after 5 road trips down there over the past 5 summers. :driving: :D

Hmm labor day weekend....off till tuesday....A drive to the coast and down it would be fun...but lotsa money. Does emergency driving just for fun count as a good enough emergency to use a credit card :D
