I interrupt this trip down memory lane for a cross cultural experience.
Americans have afternoon coffee breaks, which you probably know is nothing like tea at all. But I'm half Filipino, who have Merienda. My favourite merienda snack was halo-halo. A bizarre concoction of various sweet foods mixed with shaved ice and evaporated or condensed milk. Some of the sweet foods include purple yam, mutant coconut called macapuno, jelly like fermented coconut water, candied palm fruit, pounded immature rice kernels, plus more common, but unexpected things like red beans and creamed corn. Sounds horrid, but most first timers who get past the initial revulsion find it to be quite tasty.
An adult modification of a splash of dark rum has re-kindled my interest in halo-halo. Unfortunately, most of the ingredients cannot be found where I currently live, so it's a real treat when I can pick up the ingredients in my travels.
