Favourite song of all time

I was looking at the pop quiz thread and some of the seminal songs people post on there. That allied to the untimely death of Sinead O'Conor and the 'nothing compares...' song which was a hit at a very special period of my life. So got me thinking that everybody has a favourite song of all time for them, for one reason or another:

So please post your favourite song and why

Mine is 'Sailing' by Christopher Cross. Just a song that has it all IMO and was on the radio when I was a young teenager, so takes me back to more innocent, carefree and happy times.

This is a judgement free thread, right? good.

Avril Lavigne - I'm With You
or...
Starship - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now
or...
N-Trance - Set You Free

Three that immediately spring to mind. i'm a child of the 90s...

Because I have an odd sense of humour, and like a good guitar, it has to be 'Lola', by the Kinks.
Second favourite is 'I'm into something good', by Herman's Hermits, purely because it was No.1 when I was born.

Eagles - Taking it easy

No reasons, I just like it. I‘ve instructed my wife that it should be played when they are leaving my funeral and off for their drinks and ham sandwiches.
After listening to the lyrics she isn’t keen on my choice!

But it’s my favourite nevertheless

I think my absolute favourite two tracks are "Life on Mars" by Mr Bowie and "Journey of the Sorcerer" by the Eagles because I'm the sort of cool frood who knows where his towel is [1]

[1] Ok, ok, obscure reference to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for which this was the theme tune

If I Had a Golden Umbrella, Alma Cogan.

My gran used to play it on her phono gram. I have her original 78 somewhere.

I still sing it out loud on the moors when it's heaving down. :D Cheers every one up. Cos they realise there is some one in the world who can sing even worse than they can.

Alexa - "Play New order - sunrise." Gives me goosebumps. (Peter Hooks Bass and those drums !)

Seen them play it live several times and takes me back to when i was in my prime

There are so many to choose from!

But right now it's Queen - Brighton Rock.

 I would add my own, but the forum keep freezing up and I’ve not yet hit the Blue Nun.

Two from different ends of the musical spectrum for me,

Time to say goodbye - Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman - Gives me goose bumps as soon as I hear the intro. Pure class.

Common People - Pulp. Easy jet flight, surrounded by people in shell suits and kiddywinks. Air pods in, set playlist to full volume and this track began to play. Unfortunately it was a minute or so before I realised the Air pods had not paired with the bluetooth. Love the song though.

Nights In White Satin by the Moody Blues. They played live at the final Summer Ball of my university days at Durham. I had one one of the best nights of my life. At least I think I did from what I can remember and what my mates told me.

A few long term favourites
10cc - I'm Not In Love
Queen - Millionaire Waltz and Somebody To Love

More recent favourites
Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere, But Not Here and Anaesthetize
Steven Wilson - Regret #9
RPWL - Cold Spring Day of '22

Ooah this thread is a psychologists' dream

For me for differing reasons and at different times: R Dean Taylor - There's a ghost in my house; Alice Cooper - Poison or Pink Floyd - The great Gig in the Sky

But where are your reasons for these particular songs?

It was indeed. The ball lasted all night and we had breakfast on the race course. Amazing how the rose tinted spectacles always mean that the weather was better in years gone by.
I have happy memories too of your neck of the woods. As a child I used to go and watch Sunderland play in the times of Len Shackleton, Gentleman Jim Baxster and Jimmy Montgomery.
