Fault Code

Hello. Been out in my E85 2.2 M54.
Only done 70,000 miles and been running like a dream. Out of nowhere it started to misfire and a smell of burning oil. Plugged it into my home C110+ OBD reader and it is displaying fault code 2742 DME Misfire Cylinder 1. Has any one had this and found out what needed to be done?

Don't know about the smell of oil, that would normally make me think rocker gasket, but a DME misfire on one cylinder is often a coil or, less often, a spark plug.

I'd swap coil 1 with another coil, say coil 2, clear the codes and run the engine again. Then recheck the codes. if the error has moved to cylinder 2 then it's the coil. If it's still on cylinder 1 then it's something else, and I'd repeat the test but swapping the plug instead of the coil.

I'll bet the cam cover gasket has failed around the spark plug hole and the the coil is now full of oil.

I would agree with Rockhopper more than likely centre plug well cam cover gasket has failed and filled no1 plug well with oil causing the coil pack and plug to short out. Take the No 1 coil pack out and peer down the hole to see if there is oil in there. If there is thats your answer replace cam cover gasket which includes the centre plug well gaskets. I use Elring brand and their set that includes the round rubber seals for the cam cover bolts. Always replace these they go hard and dont compress enough to provide a good seal.

Could be anything but check crank breather they split and drop oil ! Is it using excessive oil ?

Swapped the coil pack over and the OBD fault code has now shifted from Cyl 1 to Cyl 2 so a new coil pack seems the obvious place to start. Couldn’t see any oil in and around Cyl 1 spark plug or coil pack.

Sounds like you've found it then.
The life of the plugs is supposedly up to 50k. You may want to check if yours have ever been done, while you're in there anyway.

Yes I fully agree that now is the time for a set of new plugs.
