Fairly urgent roof replacement motor or repair required

Hello all

Been attempting to fix my z4 roof - got the roof off and have discovered, not unsurprisingly, that the motor is dead due to water ingress.

I'm under quite a bit of pressure to get this fixed ASAP as I'm making use of both other people's help and their garage for basically this weekend only. So, my questions:

Can my motor be repaired? I've read on here about baking it in the overnight, bathing it in diesel, smothering it in WD40 etc - are all these worth a go? Note I think my motor is a facelift version

Does anyone know of somewhere in the greater London area where I can buy a new motor on the spot? Clearly more of an issue than normal as its now a weekend.

In the mean time I've searched google for local bmw specialists, online retailers and spares mercheants and will be making a large number of phone calls first thing Saturday morning.

However if anyone can help me please let me know! Car and I are currently in East Molesey.

Thanks in advance

Mike

These guys are about an hour away from you...

Alternatively relocate the motor to the boot, refit the roof and then you can change the motor at your leisure without the need for roof removal

I would do this and then be out of your friends way. Then concentrate on getting the motor running again . These motors are very strong and with a small amount of TLC all the ones I've sorted have come back to life without the need for replacement, bar one . But make sure you spend a decent amount of time doing the TLC , don't stop the attention to it when it starts working, carry on and give it a good going over .

If you need a new motor or replacement then roofmotors.co.uk on eBay do a reconditioned one for 250 ( 30 returned when you send back the old motor) with a 1yt warranty

Or if you can get hold of bowser123 he might have a access to a new BMW motor with a 2 yrs warranty .

Be aware though that these warranty's do not cover water ingress !

Firstly thanks to all who replied, it was really helpful.

After initially ordering a replacement motor online, it didn't come with the right flange kit for my pump and it couldn't stop fluid leaking (albeit gradually!). It was quite frustrating after thinking it was all working and putting the roof back on to find out that after 4 or 5 cycles it ground to a halt.

Anyway i gave up at that point and got hold of Bowser who (after initially diagnosing the issue with the fluid leak) relocated my motor to the boot and replaced it with a new motor/pump. I can't speak highly enough for what he's done - roof now goes up quicker than it ever has before, and you'd never know the mod has been done, it's a really clean finish. And a thoroughly nice chap too - would recommend to anyone with a z4 to give this guy a call and get it done before the motor fails!

As a footnote, i've still got this motor that i ordered - it works, just not with my pump; the motor i had comes with the flange welded to the motor, but the replacement motor i bought came without a flange at all so i bought a separate kit. I'm going to stick it on eBay but before I do, if anyone from here wants to take it off my hands they can have it (and the flange kit if you really want it, though it didn't work for me!) for £150.

Well done Bowser for sorting things out.

For anyone else in this situation, Getting the roof back on with the motor relocated in the boot is definitely the way to go and then sort the motor at your leisure, rather than paying through the nose due to urgency.
