Faint Smell Of Gasoline Right Rear Wheel Well - SOLVED

Hey folks,

I've been occasionally noticing a faint smell of gasoline from my 2005 2.5i. It's definitely NOT coming from the engine area. All of the injectors were replaced about a year ago and all of the oil and gas leaks in the engine compartment were fixed. Also, the transmission was rebuilt. The engine is dry as a bone - zero leaks anywhere there.

Anyway, one day as I was walking up to the car from behind, I smelled gasoline faintly. My nose led me to the right rear wheel well. But, when I opened the gas tank latch, I didn't smell any gas, so I've ruled out a bad gas cap.

Sometimes, I smell gas when I exit the car (I'm in the US), but I'm not able to locate where the smell is coming from, so it's probably just light wind blowing the fumes toward me... that's my best guess anyway.

Does anyone have any thoughts about what might be going on here?

Thanks!!

We had this on a Ford Sierra years ago after a rear end shunt. I kept going back to the repair shop who couldn’t find anything wrong. Eventually I threatened to sit in their waiting room until it was sorted. Turned out that they hadn’t connected the fuel pipe to the filler properly. Maybe yours has become loose.

Turns out one of the two fuel components had a leak, so had to be replaced. My mechanic strongly recommended replacing the fuel pump at the same time since there's no additional labor charge and it will also fail eventually considering it's a 25 year old car. I had him give me the working fuel pump so I might sell it on Ebay for something.

Gas smell is now gone and the car seems to be a bit more responsive.
