Failing Oil Separator/ CCV crankcase ventilation symptoms

Hi All,

Has anybody experienced a failing oil separator/ crankcase ventilation system? If so, what were your symptoms?

I've read that these can clog in cold weather and on short runs. I'm currently experiencing A short vacuum type sound which is only apparent on initial aggressive blipping of the throttle, it lasts only a split second. Slightly rough idling happens at the same time. Checked for split hoses and poor connections and all ok.

I've had the intake manifold off only to find that the oil separator unit was nowhere to be seen. Turns out that it was built into the valve cover on later N52 engines, wonderful! :headbang:

Cheers, Tom

If oil separator fails, you'll get oil consumtion, poor idle or throttle response, you can find white gunk on oil filler cap and oil breather hose (top of the engine). You can also get whisteling sound from the engine.
It's time consuming process to replace oil separator. But ti's worth doing after 100.000km/60.000miles.
