Failed MOT Burst springs!

Hi guys
Just failed my Zeds 1st MOT with me as the owner. Pretty shocked as it failed on both rear springs being broken. I was quoted£250 to have springs fitted by the garage doing the MOT. I've since fitted them myself with the assistance of a mate whos job it was to apply his weight at the appropriate time. Total time including cup of tea? .................45minutes :D
Easy peasy so glad I didnt pay for the fitting. :thumbsup:
The thing is that I had only just had the cars alignment checked not 20 minutes before the mot fail, presumably during an alignment check the actual suspension components aren't checked? I would have thought that a broken spring would affect the adjustments made? Simple question is will my alignment require an additional check in light of the spring replacement? If so I would think I would have just cause to request this free of charge :|

Think I would be going back to where the alignment was done with my failure cert pointing out that they should have noticed this.

thanks for that I think that's exactly what I'll be doing. It was Autohaus that did the alignment so they are a reputable company I'll let you know how I get on :poke:
 
Worth a shot as srhutch says, but remember that they don't actually take the wheels of when they do an alignment, and they adjust everything from below effectively. The car is sat on its wheels, so unlike an MOT where the car is in the air and you can see the springs and shocks, they remain hidden. With both springs broken there wouldn't be a noticeable difference in ride height side to side either.

Well worth the 45mins + tea doing it yourself though, and now it's fixed :thumbsup:

Very satisfying and I'm also bonding with my car, learning more about the mechanics of it and also losing faith in garages at the same time :(
A lot of that 45 minutes was spent just sussing out how best to jack the car up as I'm missing both rear plastic jacking locators. I'm certain that the garage could've done the job in 20 minutes meaning the quoted price of £250 minus £90 for the springs would nett them £160 ! That's getting on for BMW Main dealer rates :roll:
I've contacted Autohaus who agreed to do free re check of the alignment which seems pretty decent although they did say it was unlikely that it would require any adjustments. Funnily enough having spoken to Swiftly he said he'd never use these after he had a bad experience with them, ragging his car about the industrial estate all caught on his onboard camera :thumbsdown:
 
Mine failed last year. Got the springs from europarts £45.00 the pair. Took them to the garage i use and he fitted for £60.00 . I told him that they are the same manufacturer as BMW and he laughed. When i collected the car he asked me where i got them from as they were spot on.

£45the pair! :headbang: I bought Sachs springs from Eurocarparts they worked out at that each!! Must have been an offer on at the time you bought yours :cry:
