Failed Diags - dead ECU/DSC??

Guys, shock of the year! I've been intermittently getting the dreaded DSC and Handbrake dash lights (amber followed by single beep) and there seems to be no pattern but I might be bold, having read countless threads about this issue, to blame the Scottish roads as this can apparently upset the wheel sensor :? However, the lights and warning have popped up on relatively smooth surfaces too.

Anyway, had enough so popped the Zed round to an independent specialist for a diagnostic check and their kit refused to talk with the ECU, can't mind the name of the kit but they tried two sets, one being Bosch. Diagnosis without the diagnosis (if that makes sense) is that the ECU is dead, port is gubbed or faulty wiring somewhere. Anyone ever experienced this??

I'm now worried as the ECU is £1400+VAT!

The previous owner had a charger attached to the port under the dash, presume for some sort of NAV or Radar and this was removed last year by qualified auto electricians, basically it shouldn't have been there! Wonder if they've made the port inoperable? Last time the car was in BMW for diags was well over a year ago, tempted to take it to them for a second opinion with the right diagnostic kit. Couldn't tell if the indy kit point plank refused to talk or simply wouldn't download faults.

Thoughts anyone? I'm trying a battery reset but shouldn't be long before the lights re-appear based on recent performance.

Fingers crossed for any updates.

I do apologise, called the Indy for clarification....

He was talking about the DSC unit when he mentioned ECU. I've attached photos of the possible offending unit...

He had also done some digging and mentioned that a repair kit may be available, he had recently done this on a 1-series.

Still, I'm not convinced, surely the lights would be on all the time? Should I try and engage ABS err, safely?

Isn't there just a simple sensor on the axle for DSC that is known to be faulty sometimes? On my old Z it would come on if I had washed the wheels too vigorously with the jet. After a short drive and off/on it would go away. Make sure it isn't one of the sensors that need replacing first. Also you can reset the sensors by going full lock from one side to the other when stationary (I think, someone will surely confirm) I seem to remember this can sort out that problem too.

I have Ediabas INPA which is an official BMW scan product and mine cannot read the DSC Mk60 controller either, despite managing to read everything else on the car. I ran a demo version of BMW Scanner 1.4.0 though and that could read there were errors present (just wouldn't tell me what they were!) I since found my problem...

So in short, don't worry about the control unit, its probably fine, you just need to find someone with a decent scanner (like BMW Scanner)

Good luck finding your problem!

Cheers guys, must admit feeling a little better after a power of reading and your responses. Doesn't appear to be any trend towards failing DSC units but like everything else mechanical they can go. I did read about a manufacturing fault on the 04/05 years (http://www.babybmw.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=14367) so even if it is DSC unit, there's an angle to hit the dealer with. RealOEM has a repair kit listed too for £500, probably to rectify the manufacturing fault :poke:

I'll try the full lock suggestion tomorrow and probably have the wheels off to clean the sensors. Don't suppose there's any way of identifying faulty pulse sensors without the correct kit?

EdButler what was your problem, similar?

:headbang:

 Sorry I should've been more specific although it was no help to the thread... All i had was a broken brake pad sensor even though both looked ok. Turned out to be a broken wire on the rear one. I just tried scanning to help me narrow it down.

OK guys, good news so far!

I've had both front wheel sensors off after cleaning (ick!), they were covered in black goo and some minute iron filings (they are magnets after all but no sign of rubbing or scoring from the hub/disks).

Lights still on!

Found a quiet spot and engaged right then left lock whilst barely moving, stopped the car and turned off the ignition.

Ignition back on and lights are OFF!

OK, maybe just coincidence but went for a blast and lights remained off which is unusual. I'll repost once I'm confident of the fix.

Also, Indy agreed his kit would never scan the DSC and will refund the diags cost on the next service due soon.

:driving: thanks for the responses, appreciated!
