Facelifted 07 anti-rollback & brake warning light

Hi

I have a facelifted black 07 roadster, and I seem to be having a problem I've not heard of on here ...

About 6 months ago the brake warning light came on orange ... brakes seemed fine, fluid levels were OK, and the car was going in for a service in a couple of weeks, so I just drove it. The light was on intermittently over the next couple of weeks. The only thing I noticed was that if the light was on, the 'anti rollback' mechanism would not operate. I assumed that the light was implying that the anti rollback device was inoperable for some reason.

So the car was serviced, and as part of that it had new front disks, new front pads and a hydraulic fluid flush. I told BMW about the warning light and asked them to investigate. After the service I was told that after the replacement brakes stuff was done, the light was out, so they assumed no problems.

I picked the car up, and sure enough the warning light was out. However it returned to it's intermittent nature within a few days. Six months on from the service it's now on much more than it's off.

I've just taken the car in for it's MOT and they gave me an advisory due to the brake warning light being on. They were at pains to point out that the brakes themselves and the handbrake were all operating fine, and that no problems were evident. However I was able to talk to the engineer and explained what had happened.

First off he told me that Z4's did not have 'anti rollback' - which was a little annoying, and gave me cause to doubt his other points.

After I persuaded him that the car did have anti-rollback, he suggested that the none-working of the anti-rollback was more likely to be a symptom of the brake warning light being on, rather than the warning light being an indication that the anti-rollback was not working. This was an interesting idea and I can sort or understand why it might behave like that.

He suggested that as the problem was intermittent a possible cause was a fault in either the front brake loom, or the rear brake loom, which sound expensive to me. :o

I'm not so sure. The fact that the warning light on / off ratio has changed from 20 / 80 to about 90 / 10 over the last six months seems to indicate some kind of mechanical wear to me.

So my question is has anyone else had any problems with anti-rollback ? Is this likely to be the cause of my problem, or am I looking a brake fault which is causing the anti-rollback to be none-operational. Are there any quick / easy fixes ? Inquiring minds would like to know !

Have the brake pad wear sensors been replaced at all, this is the only part of the system i can think of that would wear and put a warning light on. I guess de-activating the anti rollback system could be a fail safe in case the pads are too low for it to work properly.

For the sake of only a few quid each it could be worth a try.

Simon,

Thanks for your reply. The car has had both front and rear pads changed in the last couple of services, the service invoices list

qty desc price
1 f brake pads whatever
1 r brake pads whatever

1 f brake sensor about £17.00
1 r brake sensor about £10.00

I wonder if that means they only fitted one front and one rear sensor. or whether they're priced by the pair as the pads obvioulsy are ...

As you say it's probably not a lot of money to change them, and looks a simple enough job. I'll give it a go.

There's only one pad sensor front and rear.

For clarity, what light is on? The brake pad warning light or the DBC light?

The one I've circled here ...

Strangely my (pdf) copy of the user manual says it's the 'Brake Warning light for Canadian Models' - which isn't very helpful ! I'm sure I read somewhere that it was red for serious handbrake problems, and orange for anti-rollback issues, but I can't find where that was ...

It also shows red whenever the handbrake is on.

Seriously? That's the run flat tyre warning light.

Pump your tyres up and reset the system.

OK, take two ...

The position of the warning light is indicated in green, but the icon itself looks nothing like the thing in my user manual. The icon looks like a wheel with two brake shoes ...

As I said it comes on red when the handbrake is on.

With the exclamation mark in the middle?

If so, it could be your handbrake switch is buggered, easy fix.

Could also be your Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) warning. Needs diagnostics to sort but usually this is a faulty wheel sensor and not a big deal to replace.

Pictures of your issue would help. The brake pad warning light is a circle with three dashes either side.

OK, I'll get a photo of the dash, but it will have to be tomorrow now.

Thanks to all who have responded anyway !

could be the G sensor/ yor sensor.. someone recently had a similar problem and lost their hill assist.

Here was the post: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=70173&start=0

That's an interesting set of threads, and failures seem to be very much in line with what I see. Thanks very much for your research.

One guy even had BMW tell him his car didn't have anti-rollback which was what happend to me !

I had that for the ABS pump, when the light is on the hill hold assist does not work.

Plenty of potential issues to look at :) However, as soon as something is wrong the hill hold assist stops working so that is just a symptom, not a fault and as soon as the source issue is addressed (whatever it is), it will be resolved.

Thanks for that. It's good to get a confirmation that the none-operation of the anti-rollback is a symptom, not the cause.

Its your speed sensor cluster underneath your drivers seat has failed. Easy job to do yourself. It controls your hill assist and detects lateral movement of the car for the DSC module.

Part is £400 brand new. I bought 2nd hand one off ebay. You need exact part number though. I had the same problem with bmw specialist they said i had no hill assist when i knew i did.

Took me 20 mins to change. Disconnect battery, under 4 bolts for seat, pull wiring harness out for seat, pull carpet sill trim, pull seat out, and the sensor is underneath carpet attached to a metal holder with 4 bolts

Part is called Yaw turn rate sensor/speed sensor. Part number for my 2006 3.0 si was : 3452676917403. Loads on ebay, I bought one for £63. Need correct part number one. Got told before E46 M3 one would work but it didn't. It all plug and play as long as battery is disconnected first, so no need for coding/diagnostics. Light just goes off when all connected back up. If you need any help on fitting message me
