facelift tail lights

Can i fit tail lights from a facelift model to a pre-facelift model ?

if yes - what exactly is involved ? anybody done this before ?

You need facelift light, frame around lights, facelift rear bumper and bumper plastic mount
You have to cut the bulb holders down with a hacksaw and rewire the light plug connectors. After that it's a case of coding the car with ncsexpert to change voltage supply from 6 volt to 12v. Also code to turn off "T" effect. Oh and you switch off light bulb check otherwise it throws up a bulb out light on dash.
All very simple really !!!!

bumper plastic mount - why, what is this? Dont the two bumpers just swap over?
 
don't bother with the plastic bumper mount, its 45 pounds , the old one can do the job if you hacksaw the bit of plastic of it to fit the new rear bumper since no one can see this as its under the bumper hack away until it fits. Lay the bumper on the floor remove the support and place it against the new bumper you can then easily see which bit needs cutting. I regretted buying the new bumper plastic mount to be honest as I knew I could make the old one fit quite easily. Same applies to the frame surrounds there are 2 tags that get in the way which I cut off, the lights look perfectly ok with the old surrounds with the 2 tags cut off but the gap between the light and body is less with the new ones but you can only see this from a certain angle.... if i hadnt bought the new frame surrounds I prob wouldn't have bothered as they needed painting etc, the old ones would do fine. See my pics in the first page of that thread... those pics were using the old frame surrounds not the new ones ... perfectly acceptable but you kind of know there is more of a gap than there should be, up to you i guess. I think those were 25 each and i painted them and lacquered since they are pretty much not on show. :-)
 
One of the most important points to note is make sure the bottom of the new lights are not rubbing on the new bumper, there is a lot of play when you mount them so you can push them up 5mm down 5mm left and right so get them dead centre. I didn't do this and one of the lights has been rubbing on the bumper over the past few years causing a very thin line of primer to show. Should be able to touch it up as its not on view.

heres a pic with the OLD frame surrounds and new lights ... takes a keen eye to notice the gap since no light gets in there. The prices for those bits of plastic including the bumper mount cost more than the dan rear lights did lol

i was going to keep the orginal light frames but in the end bought the facelift ones. May just be me, but i think there is too big a gap if you use prefacelift frame with facelift lights

Me too, if you going to do the job right then get new frames.
 
its one of those things where if you know its there it bothers you anyone else would have to look for the little gap at a certain angle.. I also got the facelift frames but that bumper support is a definite waste of money if you have a hacksaw to hand.

any of you that has done the rear light facelift, what codes do I have to change to turn off the "error light" on the dash, I have ncs expert i just can't find the codes..
 
1. the tail lights and break light is on
well, to prevent the "t" effect, you just have to code your light control module - in german the code is:
BREMSLICHT_ALS_STANDLICHT
nicht_aktiv

this means the breaklight should not longer work as your side markers and then they are off. everything works as intended (break, tail light..)

2. flickering of taillight / 6V issue
well, you took the power of the light of your plate sign - you can also program your light control module as follows:

PWM_ANSTEUERUNG_SL_RE_HI
wert_01

PWM_ANSTEUERUNG_SL_LI_HI
wert_01

this gives 12v to the tail lights without further modications.

this works out perfectly with my 2003 Z4 - hence no really need to buy the new light control module.

3. bulbs in the cockpit / dashboard
just deactive the checkcontrols and everything is fine.

I'm going to be doing this to my car this month, I'm just unsure about the coding part. Im from the U.S. and i want to know how to go about coding, do i input the codes in german? is it something simple? what do i need to buy? hope someone can help. thank you
 
Hi you need to get a copy of ncsexpert and a cable to do the coding. http://bit.ly/1aEWjmw

You need to code the LCM module with the above and change them from aktiv to nicht aktiv
