Facelift Roof not working

Hi Guys,

I hope some of you are enjoying the sun today with their roof down :)

I have decided to give my ZED a deep clean instead of going for a drive but unfortunately and to my surprise the roof decided not to go down :(

I am not too sure if its the motor as it worked fine 2 weeks ago, when I press the button the lock on top engage and release the roof, the light is red but the motor doesn't engage.

I remember few month ago when I opened the booth trim to get the Bluetooth code and when I replaced everything the roof stopped working for few days but then it was back on so I am suspecting a switch in the boot which I dont know where it is !!!!! but again with the wet weather lately drains might have been blocked but again its a facelift model and I think they don't suffer from the drains issue.

I would be very grateful if you guys can tell me how do I know for sure that it is the motor that ceased ?!!!!

Many thanks for your help

it does sound more like tbe boot microswitch might be playing up... worth a look

The facelift now due the age of the model has the same problem with the roof motor.
Sounds like the shelf in the up pos or micro switch.

Sorry for the hijack,
on what year from did the roof motor problem get rectified by bmw?
Also Ben my roof as stopped working,
It does disconect at front when pressing button then just stops.
I beleive my problem is the motor as it failed whilst it was down,
Using a torch could see the water where the motor lives.
Good luck wirh the fix hopefully it may just be the shelf as said.

Hi sw4nny, I think the face-lift was back in 2006 and mine is late 2008.
I am having the same symptoms, disconnect at the front then stops, red light keeps on flashing.
Have you got a face-lift model as well ? Where did you look with a torch ?

Usually if the Microswitch is broken or the shelf is up the LED on the roof button goes Orange, not Red.

if its the main Roof Motor, try giving the roof a helping hand manually to start in either direction (whilst someone holds the button down if needed). The beginning of the movement is the where the motor is required to work hardest. If a helping hand gets it going, then it's definitely the main motor.

Try this and report back..

Hi mine is pre facelift 2005
Whilst the roof is down shine torch down into where the gap is above the drain holes just in front of rear wheels.
I have cleaned the drain holes, not a lot of water came out,I dont think it takes a lot of water to flood the motor.

Thanks Number5, I have tried that but It didn't work, I am more inclined towards a connection somewhere.

do you guys know if there is an electrical connection behind the boot carpet ?

Yes. remove the storage pod (or addl speaker if you have them) behind the passenger seat (5 screws and it then pulls out) also remove the small "Air grille" just to the side of that too, which just pops out. You will see the roof module mounted there on the inside of the wing of the car, and there are two multi-connection plugs going onto it, on the underside. Check those are connected. Otherwise, there are two spade connectors that go onto the bottom of the roof motor. I've seen these quite loose before but you'll need the roof out to get at those.

I'll wait to hear before going any further at this stage..

yep, the FL also suffers from the same roof motor problem.
I have a 2008, when I bought mine last year from the 1st owner, he gave me all the repairbills from the dealer.
In 2011 the roofmotor was replaced by BMW under warranty.
And when I bought the car in April 2015 the roof motor was "flooded" again (that,s why it was €1500 cheaper than "normal" )
I decided to relocate the motor to the boot, the guy that did the job for me took out the "broken" motor, dried it and cleaned it with some WD40.
The same roof motor worked just fine after that

It's not the microswitch or shelf in the wrong position. If the microswitch fails nothing whatsoever works when you press the roof button. No window drop, no unlatching, nothing.

My car is an 2008 and the roof motor as been replaced due to blocked drains, so would not read anything into the face lift statement

Unfortunately having read your post, it sounds as though the motor is the issue.

Microswitch normally makes the light by the button go orange and it doesn't disengage. Try not to fret too much, it's actually a fairly OK DIY to remove the roof, then the motor, clean it up and re-fit. At a cost of only your time. (this is as long as you're a little bit handy).

If you refit the motor, please mount the motor in the boot to get rid if this problem forever

i have got the roof fault at the moment where is this micro switch ,i cant locate it a pic would be nice as i am thick, changed my battery now the roof not working

its operated by a tangue which is at the rear/middle of the parcel shelf, you may have knocked it out of alignment while fitting the battery?
regards

Hi Number5, it has been raining every weekend so can't remove the motor :(

I am thinking of hiring a spot this weekend at a self service garage like this one: http://www.pitstartgarage.com/

Any of you guys used it before ?

Sounds like the motor sadly. Any issue with the microswitch and it wouldn't disengage the top at all. If the top whirrs and disconnects then it just doesn't go down, you're looking at the motor.

I've just replaced mine prior to selling as it was on its way out, much slower and quieter than normal. When I got it out and looked at it, it was rusted and rotten and that's despite my cleaning the drains regularly. Think the buyer is going to relocate to the boot, which would be a much better option as its a brand new OEM motor in there.
