Facelift headlight install on pre-facelift z4 - working

Thanks for the PM, I'm going to go for the following option and see how I get on.

Install xenon units and have my LCM re-programmed. They will not auto level, but they will have washers. Hopefully this will work just fine, then in the future, if I have any issues regarding MOT, I'll have to install the sensors and get a new LCM (if one is definitely necessary)

just be careful with recoding the LCM as this sorts the cars mileage. You say you havent got nav so you cannot do it through intravee.

speak to Ranski as he has xenons retro fitted.

He does? Good man!

I was planning on paying an indy to recode the existing LCM (I realise they won't auto level).

The problem will be coding the LCM as the standard DIS / INPA / SSS software wont code the LCM to do flash to pass. The problem is when up grading the facelift lights remove the inner bulb which is flash to pass and use the outer bulb. you will need a facelift LCM to do this. Only intravee so far can solve this.

Not strictly true, but it is not as easy to change the setting.

I currently have pre-facelift Xenon black lights and I'm going to replace them with the facelift silver xenon lights.
Will everything be ok?

Why would you need washers for changing from halogen to xenon? Mine is standard xenon with no washers?

It's often not enforced, probably mainly because the tester does not realise that the lights are Xenons, but it is the law.

I thought the detail in the new regs is that if self levers and washers were fitted then they needed to function, nothing about requiring them for xenons?

Extract from 2012 MOT regulations regarding HID lights:

Dazzle can also be caused if the lamps are dirty or aimed too high due to, for example, carrying rear seat passengers and/or heavy items in the boot. Vehicles with HID headlamps are therefore required to have a headlamp washing system (a wiper is not required) and be self levelling, which may be achieved either by the use of either headlamp or suspension levelling systems.

The presence and operation of these headlamp cleaning and levelling devices has been added to the test. Therefore, if a mandatory headlamp levelling or cleaning device is missing, inoperative or otherwise obviously defective this will be a reason for rejection.

Hmm, No washers on mine and I've had no issues on both MOTs I've had (by 2 different testers)

How have you go standard xenons with no washers? All 3.0 have them... Even ones with halogens :?

To add some support to this... My friend who has a celica fitted a hid kit to his car years back... When i had a celica (5+ years ago) it has projector headlights and they are aimed correctly.

He failed his mot for the first time last december, had to remove his kit (which was easy enough... But didnt have any h7 bulbs to replace it with!! )

He has since refitted it though

Hi all,

Great post!

Today I upgraded my pre-facelift Xenons to Bi-Xenons.
I also replaced the LCM with a newer one (SW v4) Part no : 6965399.

Everything works fine except the flash to pass.
When I pull the stork to flash, the inner ring (angel eyes) lights up but not the highbeams.
The highbeams work fine when I push the stork forwards.

I get the feeling that I'm missing some coding in the LCM? (with this LCM the flash to pass problem shouldnt be a problem)
Can anyone help me out here?
What coding am I missing???

Thanks,
John

In SSS software there is in the retro section an upgrade option for this which may sort out your problem but never tried it.

I temporarily resolved the flashing problem by coding this:

BIXENON_EIN_BEI_LICHTHUPE
aktiv

What it does is to use both bixenon and halogen (while lowbeams are on) as flash to pass.

It's still not the right way to do things...

If I go with the SSS upgrade option I'm worried I might break what I have.
If it doesnt work, will re-coding with the original FSW_PSW.MAN file (as it currently stands) bring me back to where I am now?

Thanks,
John

Im a bit confused about the last part of this doc...
"The xenon light retrofit with automatic headlight adjustment control requires coding.
-
Connect the battery, connect a charger
-
Program/code the parking distance control (PDC) retrofit with DISPlus or GT-1 using the CIP application and
follow the instructions in the program"

Should it really read "parking distance control PDC" ? We are after all retrofiting the lights!
Any ideas?

I ran SSS, selected the 'New Headlights' retrofit, waited a few minutes and done!
Now Angel Eyes are working properly and so is the Flash-To-Pass (even with the headlights in the 0 position).

Again, a HUGE thanks to mac27040 for helping me out yet again...!

John
p.s. I know of a used LCM (latest version) going relatively cheap if anyone is interested (saw it today).
