Facelift 2.5i NOT 2.5si - recommended?

Hi,

I'm going to see a facelift 2.5i tomorrow. I understand these are around the 175bhp mark. Has anyone got one? Is the 2.5i likely to feel slow? I drive a R56 MCS at the moment, which has the same power but feels quick due to the punchy power delivery.

Any common things to look out for apart from the roof motor? It's got 18" RFs so I'd expect a fairly harsh ride.

You will be the best judge on the speed. I had a 2.5si, they are very similar and use the same engine, but you can't tune a 2.5i to meet the 2.5si as there are some mechanical difference and from past thread way to difficult to do.

The 2.5si is very similar in performance to the pre facelift 3.0i.

The only real issue with the N52 engine in facelift models is the dreaded HVA issue, and unless you know it's been sorted you are taking a bit of a chance, but nobody has had one long enough or done enough miles to know how much of a problem it is.

I think you will find the 2.5i a bit slower than the Cooper S. I had a Cooper S before is got a 2.5 se which felt slightly slower in the lower end but about the same towards the top end and the later 2.5i is a bit less powerful

My first Zed was a 2.5si, thoughts at the time that they were similar in price, but you got 218 bhp not 175, I would have preferred a 3.0 but that was quite a bit more expensive at the time. At the end of the day its a sports car so more power is always better

I moved to my 2.5i from a 2004 Cooper S and its completely different (obviously). the noise of the Z is addictive and the only time you need "MORE POWER" is at the top end of 1st (at which point its growling). The Z is an altogether more sophisticated ride and the finishing touches, if you get a good one, are incredible. Much faster at the middle and top end and they seem to stop remarkably well. On a more practical note the boot is huge compared with the mini and bizarrely the road tax bracket was one below for me??

I got my 2.5Si a few weeks ago and first impressions are that it feels quite slow but I actually think it's deceptive, you are very quickly travelling faster than you think if not careful. The engine is very smooth and power delivery quite linear. Also the 2.5Si is quite torquey from low down for a petrol non-turbo and so you don't need to rev it hard or change down a lot unless you choose to. Compared to an MCS which I think is supercharged it won't have such a dramatic "shove" but if you let the revs rise the engine really comes alive and sounds great.

Never tried the 2.5i in comparison sorry.

I would say if you are the kind of person that would regret not getting one with more grunt then don't bother and go for an si or even a prefacelift 3 litre very little in it. However if your not fussed you can probably get a nicer lower miles 2.5 then 2.5 si as they don't hold their value quite aswell. If it's a sports car you want don't have regrets.

I think I'm right in saying there is more "standard" equipment on a 2.5Si than a 2.5i as well - could be wrong though.

Go for the 2.5Si I did and it is a big difference in perfomance over the standard 2.5i I test drove the 2.5i, but not my 2.5Si so a big suprise when I actually picked it up and felt the difference

Try to grab the sport trim if you can. Better seats, wheels etc

Won't be any faster

I have a MCs and an Z4Mc the Cs is a quick car and imho better than the 2.5, you really need to go for a 3.0 or an M for a better experience but you have to remember it will be completely different because all Zs are naturally aspirated and the Cs is turboed. The Z is much nicer to drive and in M form more fun but the Cs is such a good car I would be pushed to get rid of it for a 2.5. Keep it and get a 3.0 you can pick them up cheap now run the Zd at the weekend and the Cs through the week!! thats what I do!
