F1

Yeah, but Bernie's probably going deaf anyway. They sound shite, no drama anymore :(

How many more times are people going to ask this?

Even Bernie himself said he wants them louder.

More times we ask, hopefully they will make them louder. Last years engine

That's not going to happen, too many manufacturers now involved in the 'sport' who want to show off to potential road car buyers.

I think they sound OK a bit like the Ducati Moto GP bikes of years gone by.

However as Bing said - it's just a noise, we should be concentrating on the racing which I think is much better now. I still hate DRS aided overtaking though.

I'm also fearful that by the end of the season we'll all be fed up with Mercedes!

Andi.

I know, but for some reason in my head, watching the cars seem slower due to the sound that is missing!!!!

It maybe only noise but come on, watch the video i have posted and tell me which one you prefer :poke:

I think it probably sounds better if you're stood next to it but from the tv no. It makes the race particularly the start seem less exciting.

Guess they had to it otherwise Renault refused to take part.

I was still shitting myself when the redbulls were fighting at the start tho!!!

Feel for riccardo...he needs some luck after a disastrous run of bad luck, none of it his fault!

TBH the new sounds (tyre screech, turbos, crowd etc) that were in some cases previously drowned out are great.

I bet people said the same when they went from v10 to v8. It's a learning curve.

No it's different Ben. So much less volume. The turbos are strangling exhaust noise as they do in road cars too. It's one of the main things I loved about watching F1 live.

I've heard commentators say that the cars do sound better trackside than they do on tv. Overall I prefer the new formula where the cars have more power than grip, it's good to watch the drivers wrestling the cars round on qualifying laps on the ragged edge! Much more fun than exiting corners, planting the accelerator and letting the aero package stick the car to the road with no drama.

I'm happy to sacrifice the sound for more exciting racing but it is a shame we can't have both! :driving:

Fixed it for you

There's so much more to F1 than the noise, I mean, Spice Girls music from the Red Bull garage! what else do you need.

Joking aside there really is much more to F1 than the noise, for some years now I've enjoyed the commentary during the practice sessions probably more than the racing :)

Andi.

I think the race yesterday was dull and boring... never mind the lack of noise....

Fell asleep at the last one too...

Thankfully there was some really entertaining racing in the shape of BTCC to keep me happy...

F1 may be the most techincal these days, but it just isn't good racing anymore...

Some drivers need to learn how to overtake and stop moaning that they are faster and should be let by... what a joke! :headbang:

Limit the teams to one car each. That would eliminate all the posturing and blocking on the track. And would require a team to get on with it and race.

I'm not in agreement with those that say that because the cars have more power than traction it will make for better racing. It might be fun to see a driver have to do a bit of countersteering. But it really doesn't add to the actual racing. Dare I say that I think the cars have outpaced the tracks. He who makes it to the first corner wins (most of the time) The F1 cars are so fast and corner so well, that the tracks just won't give much opportunity for a car that is faster to get around a slower car without crashing or being penalized. As a result, All the recent racing results come down to qualifying, how well one starts, Crashing, Reliability. Passing for position is the rarest of all F1 position changing actions. Just look at the margin of victory in the last two races or for most of last year. When first through third are separated by some 30 seconds. That's no race. It called a parade.

Interesting idea to limit teams to one car, but there just aren't enough companies out there that could put together competitive cars to make the field a sensible size. Perhaps Honda and BMW might one day come back in as constructors (BMW ActiveHybrid iF1?!) but the competition for the top designers among the big teams does seem to show that we've already maxed out the expertise at least in Europe. A proper American team or two would be great but it's chicken and egg as it's such a minority sport there.

I do think that the reduction in downforce relative to power has been the most positive update this year and I think as we get round to some of the better circuits the formerly legendary corners which were easily flat last year will start to show the men from the boys. Shame we'll have to sit through Bahrain next week first though  the only interest I think that weekend will throw up is just how many seconds ahead of red bull the merc is on qualifying pace in the dry.

As for the noise - I'm sure they will play with some EQ settings to get the engine noise to be more prominent on the TV as the races go by, but in terms of watching live do people really spend all that money to go and sit in a field and make their ears bleed? Only been to one race, but I and everyone around me had ear plugs in and no real idea what was happening in the race... surely it's better now that you can actually hear the trackside announcements and the person sitting next to you as well as the cars?

Of course F1 is more than just the noise but for so many of us who have watched the races live it is one of the most important things and I've never worn ear plugs. I went to the historic Grand Prix in Monaco in 2012 and just listening to all of those fantastic engines from the 50's through to the 80's was spectacular, especially in a tight circuit like Monaco.

If the racing had got more exciting with the change in engine it would be something but as Cueball suggests it was as boring as last season in the first two races. I fear the sport is in terminal decline as the tree huggers take over.
