F1 shield opinion

Hey sportsters,

Obviously the British GP this weekend, did anyone see the cockpit shield Vettel tested in free practice on Friday? He doesn't like it so far, refraction in the screen and wind buffeting in the cockpit. There are other factors too, such as oil getting on the screen, how will rain affect visibility, how easy will it be to get out of the car in an emergency? I'm not a fan personally but Maasa, for example was very lucky to have had a glancing blow a few years ago when a spring fell off a car and hit his helmet left corner, full on centre head would probably have killed him. Then Alonso was close to being decapitated when a car launched and slid across his cockpit. I doubt anything would have saved Jules Bianchi, such was the impact speed and solid metal counter weight he hit on a tractor, but there's understandably a cause for concern, I don't know what the answer is, I like open cockpits in single seaters, but not at the cost of lives or serious injury.

Anyone have an opinion?

I think you summed it up pretty well
Motor sport is dangerous
I think it's about probabiility and risk and managing the risk to acceptable levels
Are you introducing more issues with a halo or screen than the ones you are trying to fix

Look back to the Mansell years which seemed lght years ahead of the Stewart era, to where we are now

Brundle has just done a piece on Sky F1 that has shown how safety has progressed in all areas

Safety features should always be an area that is continuously improving,as long as it means it allows the cars to go faster.
It should not take away the possibility of accidents or crashes as this makes Motorsport boring it should mean when accidents or crashes happen no one gets hurt.
