F1 on the BBC

Just read that the new deal has been announced - BBC are showing half the races from 2013, SKY will show them all. Bit of a crap deal if you ask me - since you're now going to need a Sky Sports subscription to watch all races why bother even keeping half on BBC. When I moved recently I didn't bother getting Sky in the new place, didn't watch it enough to warrant the cost. Guess I'll need it back again now. That or a local pub with Sky Sports will be making more money from me in 2013!
Highlights will be available on BBC for all races, which I guess will be enough to keep most viewers happy. Can't see the quality of the coverage being as good though on terrestrial as a result - surely (especially with BBC paycuts) the current team are going to be looking to Sky so they can go to & present all the races.

Would've preferred BBC just to cut back their coverage (pre & post race, quali, red button etc) and show all the races. Although it's interesting and I enjoy watching, it's not really necessary to have a 2 hour program for 1hr quali & then a 3 or 3.5hr program for what's typically a 1.5hr race.

oh dear :(

no way am I going to be paying the extortionate sky prices so I can catch all the races

agree about all the extra coverage that could be cut - I never watch the build up anyway.

Really angry about this.

Have freesat & this will just make me search out streams, not buy sky. Tempted to try and drum up an anti-murdoch pro-f1 movement to get some publicity against it..

Not amused either. Hope this isn't another sport that gets the SKY treatment otherwise the drivers will go out to their cars with a bimbo on their arm and stupid music playing

I wonder whether the BBC licence fee is spent on anything other than tory bashing nowadays...

I dont get it, it says they were contracted to 2013 with the BBC and that was part of the Concorde agreement - even Whitmarsh is saying he thinks it breaks their deal with the teams..

So why is it apparently changing over next season & not 2013?

Bernie is delighted because he's being paid twice to broadcast in one country! It's the way things are going with media in general I'd say :- some free stuff but to get the quality or full coverage you need to pay (aka times paywalls etc)

Bernie is such a a***hole  . I have sky movie package, but not sport one (I don't watch sports). If I have to watch F1 live from next year, that means I have to upgrade/change my current package with sky. I'm sure F1 will lose audience as a result. BBC has been broadcasting F1 very well (better than ITV).

Just hope F1 teams will protest against the move.

+1

Really pissed off about this as I only have Freeview - I don't watch enough TV to justify a Sky installation.

F1 has IMO only really started to get more interesting again over the past few years too: I've really been enjoying it. Surely this move is just going to screw up the number of followers? But then I guess this is all about the money and nothing to do with the fans.

:x

Really wierd this, there is completely the opposite argument going on with MotoGP in so far that the Beebs coverage is woefully inadequate and not a patch on what Eurosport puts out, with everything hidden behind the red button.
But totally agree that only showing half the season is absolute rubbish. Any takers on this being to purely line the Dwarfs pocket even further after the collapse of F1 TV due to nobody watching it.

I won't pay to watch F1. I think many will do the same. Someone will set up a petition and we can all sign up.The teams should kick off big time about this.

I'd love to think that there would be a move away from watching it and paying for it on sky but i doubt there will be. I rarely watch F1 these days, very anti the whole thing and although i love footie i won't pay sky for the privilege, actually enjoy 5 lives commentaries. Unfortunately everything is about money and it has ruined football, doubt it will ruin F1.
